Oct. 17th, 2015 01:58 pmWhen I opened this, I was going to make another crabby complaining post*, but that's boring. So instead, I am going to make a list of things that are currently making me happy:
- My dumb DC superhero shows are all back, hooray! And The Flash is doing ridiculous multiverse stuff and there's Jay and his goofy hat and I'm so happy.
- I got to write stuff today with my favorite pen, it is always such a joy. Seriously, this is my advice for people who are insecure about their handwriting: get a pen with a 1.1 italic nib. (I like the Pilot Plumix - it's cheap and comes in purple and you can buy a converter to make it use prettier ink. Mine currently has Diamine's Ancient Copper, which is gorgeous.) The italic nib makes basically anything look prettier.
- I ordered new tea from the internet yesterday and it shipped this morning. I love buying tea.
- Tomorrow, my mom, my sisters and I are having a crafternoon, where we each bring a different craft project to teach the other three. I am bringing a simple chain maille bracelet pattern I just learned and a bunch of multicolored jump rings. Very exciting.
- Because I am a giant nerd who can't get the songs from Hamilton out of her head, I started reading the Hamilton biography by Ron Chernow it's based on. Which is honestly pretty great - if you want to read an 800-page biography of Alexander Hamilton, I recommend it. (I say that with the caveat that, y'know, I haven't gotten to the end of the war yet. It is a long book.)
- I have a new podcast! It is Wolf 359 and it is full of pretty great space adventures and creepy space mysteries. (As a Trekkie, it does slightly confuse me every time they say the title, though, because they say three-fifty-nine and it just sounds wrong.) I am about 10 episodes in and I love everything about it.
- I am really looking forward to the grilled cheese sandwich I'm planning to make for dinner tonight. It's going to have Hawaiian bread and spices and it's going to be delicious. I love grilled cheese sandwiches.
So that is a short list of things that are making me happy today. What's making you guys happy today?
*OMG, lady, when I warn you that the library printer is broken and so you can't print, that is not something I'm doing to you maliciously to ruin your day, and it's not going to magically fix itself if you're mean to me. I'm sorry you came here just to print something and wasted a trip because that sucks, but it's not an excuse for you to act like that.

Feb. 19th, 2015 09:20 pmThings:
- I haven't posted since my little mini-vacation in Longbeach, so let me tell you about it! It was great. I did a lot of hiking in beautiful forests near beautiful beaches, I looked at birds (some of which I had never seen before), I watched a lot of tv, I knit a sock, and I did not converse for more than five minutes with another human being for three whole days. That is pretty much my ideal vacation - an activity that gets you out of the hotel room (or whatever) for part of the day and then the rest of the day to stay inside by yourself. The only way the weekend could have improved would have been to have actual wifi.
- The tv I watched was about half of the first season of Prison Break. Because I figured, if that's where all the Flash villains are going to come from, I might as well watch it, right? It was an excellent decision.
- Speaking of The Flash! You guys, I am so impressed with this show's commitment to its whacked-out source material. If you had told me before the show started that we'd be getting ( spoilers ) at all, let alone in the first season, I would not have believed you. That is amazing. What is less amazing is the idea that now I have to wait a month for the next episode. The next episode is going to have ( spoilers )! I don't want to have to wait a month for that!
- Also speaking of the Flash, for the last several days, I have been reading comics from the 70's. Oh man, Bronze Age Flash comics are amazing. Iris is from the future, Sinestro teamed up with the Weather Wizard one time, the Rogues apparently have a yearly convention with awards, the Top died of spinning too hard plus speed vibrations and there was a memorial service full of the worst puns ever. So great. Plus, now I have actually read the first issue with the Golden Glider and she is, as expected, the most amazing. It is honestly a problem reading these comics on my phone because I find myself giggling with glee in public.
- The best thing about having a Monday off (as I did this week, thanks to President's Day) is that the work week following seems so short. Tomorrow is already Friday - amazing!

Jan. 20th, 2015 10:25 pmThings:
- I enjoyed tonight's episode of The Flash immensely. I am here for all the Rogue team-ups, please and thank you. (I swear to god, I really do care about Barry et al but you really can't expect me to pay attention to them when I could be thinking about Captain Cold. Also ( spoilers ))
- I have recently started learning how to draw Celtic knotwork designs and am finding it very satisfying. I really enjoying making big whole-page designs - I find the actual process of drawing them very soothing, because it requires me to follow a series of steps that are time consuming and require concentration but aren't actually difficult and don't really require any sort of artistic talent. And then I get to color them, which is always pleasing. Plus, when they're done, it's very calming to trace over the lines with my fingers. I suppose it's a little like the idea of finger labyrinths or those zentangle things.
- Megan and I went to see the last Hobbit movie this weekend, so I am having a little bit of a Tolkien resurgence. Which is why I'm listening to the Silmarillion on audiobook. Possibly, that way I will actually finish it. Ungoliant has just eaten the two trees at present. If I can get past the Noldor returning to Arda, I will officially be farther than I've ever gotten before.
- The thing is, I am really happy for everyone who is rooting for the Seahawks - it's cool that your team won and is going to the Superbowl again - but I will pretty much also be really happy when football season is over and I don't have to talk about it with people at the library any more.

Dec. 2nd, 2014 09:31 pmDear the people making the Flash show,
Kudos to you for making the Rainbow Raider actually kind of a credible threat. Well done.
Also, kudos to Stephen Amell for saying the name "Roy G Bivolo" on camera without cracking up. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done that.
Oh god, I love this ridiculous show.

Apr. 26th, 2014 06:50 pmWhat I have done today:
- Miscellaneous crafty things.
- Watched cartoons.
- ( Read comics. )
- Absolutely nothing else.
This is the first weekend in at least six weeks where I haven't had somewhere to go or something to do. It is awesome.

Apr. 25th, 2014 09:26 pmThe thing is, I was on steam the other day because I have a new computer that will actually play some of the games I want to play (I am finally playing Mass Effect!) and they had that DC Universe Online thing that you can play for free. And I am weak for DC comics, so I installed it, thinking that if I hated it, I would not have spent any money.
And then I spent several hours today designing a character with ice powers, superspeed*, and a kicky little yellow skirt, and then wandering around Gotham beating up police officers. Because if you can play a DC MMORPG as the Golden Glider, why the hell wouldn't you? My only regret is that I couldn't give her ice skates.
Flash villains = still the best.
*No, Glider doesn't have superspeed. But you have to pick a movement type and the other two are "flight" and "acrobatics". Since there is no option for "generates a gravity-defying ice flow with her own skates", I chose superspeed because it's at least thematically appropriate.

Nov. 7th, 2013 01:01 pmThings:
- I love being in the library on rainy days before we open, because I hear patrons out in the hallway squelching towards the door and then squelching away again like swamp monsters. I find it unaccountably amusing.
- The thing about listening to the Thrilling Adventure Hour is that I find myself actually becoming emotionally invested in certain of the segments. I have a stupid amount of feelings about Sparks Nevada, you guys!
- For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, yesterday I found myself rereading some of the comics I have on my computer. And now I need you to tell me that I don't need to reread all the Wally West comics from the beginning, because I'm pretty sure that's a bad idea. And I'm pretty sure that I'm going to do it if not convinced to do otherwise.
- I forgot that this weekend was a three-day weekend until this morning! Unexpected day off! Hooray!

Dec. 5th, 2012 06:33 pmTea egg verdict: Well, they are very pretty. The recipe works as it is probably supposed to. Alas, they are not for me. The egg white is okay, but the yolk (which is the part I like the least in a hardboiled egg) is inedible. (Quite literally - I couldn't make myself swallow the bite I took of the egg. Which is my usual reaction to hardboiled eggs, to be fair.) Ah, well.
If you are the kind of person who likes hardboiled eggs, though, you should totally try this. The eggs are really pretty.
I will make macaroni-from-a-box to eat instead. I have the evening to myself and, since I have been feeling frazzled of late, I have given myself permission not to work on Christmas knitting. So I am reading Silver Age Flash comics*. Here are things that are wonderful about Silver Age Flash comics:
- The sheer number of ridiculous alien invasions. Seriously, it's like every other month.
- Tiny!Wally. Oh Wally, I love you and your wholly absurd origin story. Does it ever get awkward that people like Captain Cold and the Weather Wizard have literally known you since you were 10? Is that why they came to your girlfriend's funeral that one time?
- PUPPET FLASH. Okay, that issue wasn't actually that great (I maintain that nothing starring Abra Kadabra can really be that great and so far, I have seen no evidence to the contrary), but the existence of Puppet Flash is a joy forever.
- One time, Captain Boomerang invented a time travel boomerang that he used to rob museums (as you do) but, turned out the boomerangs were passing through another dimension and the aliens from that dimension thought they were spy probes and so invaded our dimension in retaliation. I do not in any way believe that Captain Boomerang could build a time travel device but I totally believe that he accidentally caused an alien invasion.
- Relatedly, the number of villains who end up building fantastic supervillain tech while in prison. Captain Boomerang, the Mirror Master, Captain Cold ("Well, I'm in jail. Guess I'll study thermodynamics."), this one guy who invented a machine that allowed him to watch tv and control the people on it if it was a live broadcast - you'd think that the Central City Penitentiary would look out for that kind of thing. I mean, what kind of prison are they running?
- The Top. The Top is ridiculous. I mean, the vast majority of Flash villains are ridiculous, but The Top. He commits crimes with spinning tops! What the hell? (In later comics, they gave him mind control powers. This did not actually make any sense and did not make the Top any cooler.)
- Ralph Dibny! Every time Ralph shows up, it makes me happy.
- Gorilla City is pretty terrible but the fact that one of the Flash's recurring villains is an evil gorilla with mind control powers fills me with joy.
- COSMIC TREADMILL. The Cosmic Treadmill never stops being hilarious. I love it.
- In the future, everyone will have a atomic pistols. Did you know?
- There was seriously an issue where the villains were sentient evil clouds. Tell me that's not amazing.
Annnd, I am going to stop there or else this list will go on for an embarrassingly long time. And I need that time to read comics. 8)
*My comics reading for the past couple months has been pretty much dominated by the Flash. Specifically Wally West. The trajectory went New 52 Flash** -> all the Flash comics the library owned (not many) -> all the Wally West. (Well, not all. I cannot do early Wally West comics. I made a valiant effort and skipped ahead to the 90's and Mark Waid.) I have now stalled out somewhere around issue #203 because the art has become wholly dire. Everyone is hideous and it makes me sad. But I will have to go back at some point, because the storyline is really interesting. Just, y'know, ugly. In the meantime, I am reading ridiculous things from the '60s.
**Which, now that I know more about the Flash than I did when I read the New 52 stuff the first time, is really confusing, reboot-wise. I just, okay, so there is no Wally and Barry's never met Jay but Keystone still exists on Barry's earth and Bart is around somewhere but isn't from the future or related to Barry (I guess, I've only encountered reboot!Bart in a trade I read part of in a bookstore)? And we've gone back to the first Mirror Master (I miss McCulloch, you guys) and Glider is back from the dead/possibly was never dead in the first place (and I am in no way complaining about that because Glider is awesome, though I do miss the skates a little) but we aren't back to the first Trickster? What is going on?

Sep. 5th, 2012 05:56 pmThings:
- While driving to work today, I found myself behind a car with an "Agent Coulson Lives" bumper sticker. I don't know who you are, sir or madame, but you are officially my favorite person in Kitsap county today.
- The thing about being home alone is that it means that, if I want to spend extensive periods of time knitting, I can do so uninterrupted. Which is why the pair of socks I started last week is nearly finished. I'm pretty pleased with them: the cabling turned out pretty well and I've now learned how to knit an afterthought heel. (Like most things that I learned to do in crochet first, it is more fiddly and difficult but looks better.) Alas that it is not quite cold enough to start wearing handmade socks.
- All that knitting requires knitting tv. I have been rewatching Justice League, which is still immensely fun. I have also been reading comics about the Flash. Here is what I love about Flash comics today: ice skating themed supervillains. I have not actually read a lot with the Golden Glider, but her existence fills me with joy. Mostly, I like the Rogues in general. I find myself charmed by the idea of a group of supervillains who have basically all said, "Screw taking over the world - I just want to rob banks and watch hockey." Because, let's face it, that is exactly the kind of supervillain I would probably be - clever enough, but not particularly ambitious. Though, in my case, the hockey would probably be replaced with sci-fi tv.
- You could tell that school had started at the library today, because we already had kids coming up to the desk and asking for school supplies. Ah, September. (Also, the thing where school here starts on the Wednesday after Labor Day continues to confuse me. Why would you start school on a Wednesday? I mean, I suppose starting on a Tuesday makes just as little sense, but it's the thing that I grew up with and thus is Correct, right? Heh.)
