There was a little girl (maybe 6 years old) in the children's library today, singing the chorus to Lady Gaga's Telephone for about half an hour.

It was pretty awesome.

There is a tiny girl in the library, wearing a frilly pink dress, loudly proclaiming her love of Batman.

I really don't want to shush her.

And then, because sometimes it seems like all I do is complain about my patrons, I just had a lovely conversation with a woman who is watching through Star Trek: TOS for the first time and has just finished Trouble with Tribbles. She was so adorable and enthusiastic! And so excited about tribbles!

So sometimes library patron are lovely. 8)

Today, I got to tell someone about our downloadable collection and she was so excited. She left, saying "I just want to go home and play with that!"

That is seriously my favorite part of the job.

Literally the first patron into the library today is an eight-year-old-looking girl, singing David Bowie songs.

That is my favorite thing so far today.

In other happy library news:

We have this program called Freegal, which is a stupid name but is a totally awesome thing that lets you download 3 free tracks a week from a surprisingly large catalog of music and keep those tracks forever. (Seriously, check your local library and see if they have this - it's great.)

There's this teenage girl in the library whom I've never seen before, but who happened to see the flyer for Freegal on our desk. So she asked me about it and I told her what it is and her eyes seriously lit up with glee.

I really like making people's eyes light up with glee.

One of the things that I love about working at the library is tiny children who come to the library wearing costumes for no apparent occasion.

Today, there is a little boy in a Batman costume with, and this is the crowning glory, Spider-Man wellingtons.

I'm pretty sure that if you tried to combine Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker into one person they, or possibly the universe, would explode but still. Well done, that kid.

There is a tiny little boy in the library this morning who just keeps singing the first half-verse to Holy Holy Holy, over and over again.

It's weirdly adorable, but I'm going to have that song stuck in my head all day.

Today is the kind of day where we've only been open about half an hour and already I kinda want to punch people. Just a little.*

But instead of dwelling on that, I am going to focus on happy things! Here are some things that are making me happy today.

1) Doctor Who! I have been listening to Big Finish things for a few days now and rewatching Seventh Doctor episodes (Ace!) and all is full of joy.

2) It's possible that I may have changed my ringtone on my phone to the disco remix of the Blake's 7 theme. It seemed like a good idea at the time. My phone doesn't ring very often but every time it does, it makes me smile.

3) I have some sort of pastry with nutella in it to eat with dinner. Sometimes the pastries from my grocery store are a little disappointing but I cannot imagine anything can go wrong with something containing nutella.

4) I have to work on Saturday, but I have Sunday off and the familia is driving down to Oregon so my grandmother can visit my great-aunt, so I will have the house to myself. As that's the closest to August 1st that I have time and space to celebrate, I am declaring this Sunday to be Lammas and will be making bread and possibly fried apples. I haven't made bread in forever - I am excited.

5) We have this patron who has an extensive garden and sometimes, he brings us vegetables at the library. Lately, he has been harvesting garlic. So I have a head of home-grown garlic in my bag to take home.

What is making you happy today?

*Man, I hate the AR program. Not in and of itself, necessarily, but because the schools don't give us their AR lists and so we have kids who come in, not knowing what books they're looking for but only knowing that they want a "2.9 book". Which, I have no idea what that is.

All right. The last few days have been full of depressing posts and today the weather is horrible again, but instead of focusing on that, I am going to post about happy things. Here goes:

- It is bucketing down rain, as it has been for the last several days. However, I am inside and warm and dry. And I don't have to go outside for any reason whatever until 8 o'clock tonight. (ETA - Oh, and now it's thundering! Awesome!)

- I decided to dress up today - jacket and tie-with-a-tie-bar and all - and I look awesome.

- Today, while buying my dinner, I found myself craving jelly candy. (Not gummi - jelly candy. Different.) So I found chocolate covered raspberry jellysticks and bought them and they are delicious. Just what I wanted. I should learn to make jelly candy.

- I have been reading Star Trek: TOS novels on my kindle recently and they are pretty much made of love. I'm in the middle of rereading The Wounded Sky. It makes me so happy.

- The socks I'm currently knitting are pretty nifty. I'm using this yarn in Blue Yonder and it's gorgeous. I'll link to the pattern but I can't find it anywhere but on ravelry, where you need an account to see it. But if you're on ravelry, it's this one, which is pretty and just complicated enough not to be boring while not becoming so complicated that it's frustrating for me. I even managed to not get bored with the pattern for long enough to actually make the leg the right length! They're going to be awesome socks when they're done.

What's making you happy today?

Today, I learned a valuable lesson which I will now share with you.

Do not tell small children that the shirt you are wearing glows in the dark, no matter how cool it is that it does so. Unless, of course, you don't mind said small children flinging themselves at you and pressing their faces against your shirt (with their hands around their eyes like a tunnel) to check that you're telling the truth.

(It was her. Despite the unexpected groping, I think she is my favorite.)

A library story from yesterday.

So, I'm shelving during one of the periods when a class from the school across the street has descended upon us. A little six-year-old girl walks up to me - I know she was six because she told me several times - and asks a question.

"I'm looking for books on animals."

I start walking her over to the 590's in the nonfiction picture books and ask her if she has a particular animal she's looking for. After a few minutes of thought, she tells me that she's looking for foxes.

Easy enough. I pull out a couple books on foxes and ask if they look like something she'd like.

"Wait, no. Not foxes. It's another word. I know I know the word!" I wait patiently for a moment. Finally, she comes out with it.

"Werewolves!"

That is a little girl after my own heart.

(Alas, we were unable to find her any books on werewolves that she didn't think looked too scary. And I only thought of it after she left, but if she comes in next times still wanting similar things, I'll try to find her some Japanese fairytales about kitsune.)

The best part of my day was totally the nine year old boy who walked into the children's library and up to the desk and said, in a loud voice, "Do you guys know an author named Ray Bradbury?"

Turns out, one of his teachers had shown the class a film called Quest based on a Bradbury story and the kid wanted to know if we had it. Alas, it is a short from 1983 so we don't but we did find it for him on youtube. And give him recommendations of Bradbury to read.

Possibly, we have witnessed the birth of a sci-fi fan. One never knows.

It is just bucketing down outside. The rain is streaming down the street, the water in the Sound is grey and misty, and everything is muffled by falling water. And I am inside, dry and warm and surrounded by books.

This is my favorite kind of day.

In which my job is occasionally totally awesome:

- I picked up a phone call this morning and the man on the other end said, "I'm trying to find out how to spell something. Y'know those worms that live in the water and bore into ships? I think they're called 'teredo'. Do you know how to spell that?" (As a matter of fact, I do. Hurrah for sounding things out as though they are words in my high school Spanish class!)

- A lady came in who's visiting from Arizona and wanted to know if she could get a temporary card. Not only was I perfectly willing and able to do that but we had a movie she'd wanted to see for months, right there on our shelf.

- One of our regular patrons - she's a little younger than me and a semi-closeted geek - came in this morning to pick up a hold which happened to be a Star Trek novel with Spock on the cover. She looked a little sheepish to be checking it out and I know that I am always helped with that problem by finding a kindred spirit, so I asked if she'd read any of Diane Duane's Original Series novels. She had not - in fact, this was her first ever Star Trek novel - but she looked a lot happier to not be the nerdiest person in the room and hell, I just got paid to talk about Star Trek novels. Overall win.

Three awesome things and we've only been open for less than an hour. Today is pretty damned good.

One of the best things about working at the library is those times when a patron you've never seen before comes in and you get to connect with that person immediately, just because they've asked you for a certain book.

First patron today is a kid who came up and asked if we have any Lovecraft. Alas, we have none at Kingston because we are a tiny branch so I told him I could put some on hold for him. "Or, well," I said, "I don't know if this would work for you but most of Mr Lovecraft's stories are available for free online. You're welcome to use one of our computers."

Man, I love watching people's faces light up when you tell them how to get just the book they want. And it is always lovely to meet a fellow fan.

First patron of the day. I'm going to be smiling about that for hours.
