Feb. 22nd, 2013 08:08 pmIn which I describe life with my grandmother:
So, I take Jack out for his nightly constitutional. The tiny yappy dog up the street whose owners let him run around at all hours in defiance of leash laws and common courtesy*, launches himself at us. I yell at the dog, Jack starts barking (and hiding behind me, because Jack is terrified of tiny yappy dogs) - it is no good.
We go back inside the house and I start singing a little song: "Tiny nasty dog up the streeet, someday I'm going to kick you in your faaace, I'll dropkick you into the neeeeighbooor's yaaard...**"
Granny, who is reading in the den, says, "Oh, that's all right, honey, I'm fine just sitting here - I've got my book."
Oh Granny. What conversation do you think you're responding to?
*His name is Spike, because of course it is.
**Disclaimer: I would not ever actually do these things. But they're pleasant to think about.

Sep. 27th, 2011 08:38 pmThe Jack-dog has been having skin problems of late that may be allergies or may be something else, so today he had a skin biopsy. And the vet sent him home in a Cone of Shame, which he has to wear for two weeks.
So now he's a little woozy from anesthetic and can't quite figure out where the edges of the cone are and is, essentially, the saddest dog in the world. Even his tail is sad - normally, Jack's tail wags constantly, like a metronome, but there is no wag in Jackville tonight.
Poor sad wagless dog.

Mar. 29th, 2011 03:17 pmThings:
- At choir last night, the director announced that we are no longer going to be performing "America" (from West Side Story). My relief cannot be properly expressed.
- Jack seems to be settling in pretty well. This morning, he followed me around the kitchen the whole time I was making lunch. Possibly, he thought I was going to give him something. In any case, it was pretty adorable.
- He does not sit right under your feet during food prep, though. (It wouldn't really work if he did - he's pretty large.) I still miss my Rosie.
- We had volunteers in the library this morning to do extensive dusting. I love that people volunteer and that they want to help us out - that is awesome and those people should be commended and showered with appreciation. But I wish they wouldn't not a) steal all my carts, and b) be constantly in my way.
- It is a pretty quiet afternoon otherwise, so I am doing random internet browsing. Things about the internet that are awesome, #1098: The Bone Room. I could buy a skull over the internet! How cool is that?
- Though, in truth, I don't want a skull. (Well, maybe a small one I could keep in my pocket.) Really, I would buy finger bones. Alas, they seem to be sold out.

Mar. 27th, 2011 07:21 pmIn the past week, since Rosie left, we've missed her quite a lot. Also, we've realized that we also miss having a dog in general, in addition to missing Rosie specifically. So we started thinking about getting a new dog. On Thursday, my parents visited the local Humane Society, just to look.
You see where this is going, right? We have a new dog - brought him home today.
His name is Jack, and he's a Dalmatian/German Shorthaired Pointer mix. He's an older dog - probably around eight - and underweight from being a stray (though he was microchipped before he turned up at the Humane Society) but he's just gorgeous. He's a lot bigger than Rosie and he has a tail, which is weird, and he is about the mellowest dog I've ever met. Seriously, he hasn't barked once. Which is also weird.
He's not Rosie and I still miss her a lot. But I'm glad we found a new dog and I'm glad we could give him a home.
