My dog, Jack, was put to sleep today. He'd been deteriorating quickly for the last little while, but over the last week it had rapidly gotten worse. He wasn't eating and could barely walk, and this morning he wouldn't stop crying. I was at work, but I knew it was coming. My parents called me to let me know what was happening, then took him to the vet and there was nothing else to be done. They tell me he went out very peacefully.
We got Jack from the Humane Society. He was all skin and bones when we adopted him, but I couldn't see how anyone could have abandoned him like that. (We know he was abandoned because he was chipped but no one came to claim him.) He was the sweetest, most patient dog I've ever met. He almost never barked, he'd let you snuggle him as long as you wanted with no complaints, and all he ever wanted was to be with his people. He wasn't perfect - sometimes he ate books and he was always underfoot in the kitchen - but he was loving and cheerful and good-hearted. He was my buddy and my sweet boy.
Jack was a good dog - one of the best. I miss him.
