The Aviary

So, a little while ago, asexual_fandom had a prompt-fic meme thing. Which was pretty awesome in general, and had some really neat fic came out of it - there was a Pride and Prejudice fic about Charlotte Lucas, for example, which I think is now canon in my head. Honestly, just reading the prompts made me happy because it was like seeing little snapshots of places where maybe a little piece of me fits into the stories that I love. So I stuck a few prompts up myself, not really thinking that they'd get filled, but just enjoying thinking of those possible stories. One was for Re-Animator (my tiny freaky fandom, let me show you it) because, really, nearly all mad scientists are homoromantic asexuals in my head, and the other was a Nero Wolfe prompt about Saul Panzer.* I posted them and then pretty much forgot about them.

Today, in my inbox, I got asexual Saul Panzer fic. Pretty much, it made my day. I am amazingly thrilled, so I'm sharing it with you.






*I don't actually have much of a reason for reading Saul as being ace, but I do so anyway. Probably, a lot of it is due to the fact that Saul is pretty much my identification figure in the books. Setting aside the fact that I am not badass enough to be anyone in the Nero Wolfe books (because pretty much no one is), I could never be Archie or Wolfe or Lily. But the idealized version of me that I keep in my head - the version of me that is self-sufficient and quietly competent? That version of me could maybe be Saul Panzer. So again, it's about the places where we see pieces of ourselves, isn't it?

Or, more shallowly, it could be because I have an enormous crush on him. (He is adorable and constantly rumpled and he plays the piano. Also, he is a goddamned superhero. We could get married and live quietly together, discussing books and not having sex and he could teach me to play pinochle.) So that's kind of a thing, too.

Today, it is hot.

Yesterday, it was also hot. I had the day off work (because of the Fourth of July and our wacky holiday flex time thing), so I went to the movies (air conditioning!) and saw Toy Story, which is pretty awesome. And then I came home and lolled about trying not to move and reading Administration, which I finally got around to putting on my kindle.

(Have you read Administration? Do you like dystopian settings, characters who are aren't good guys or bad guys but just people doing good or bad things, interesting sex scenes, and sci-fi murder mysteries? Did you, in fact, like Blakes 7 but wanted something with fewer wobbly sets and more (onscreen) porn? Then you should read Administration.)

Today, I am planning to loll around until it is time to go to work which today is at the Bainbridge library and thus air conditioned. And hopefully tomorrow it will be less hot.

Comment!fic meme over at asexual_fandom! It just started today, but it looks like it could be fun. Already there is fic about Ethan Rayne, which makes me incredibly happy.
