Apr. 16th, 2022 07:25 pmLast week, I remembered how much I enjoy anchovies and sardines and other fish that comes in cans (that is not tuna*). Which has led to me remembering how delightful Fish Toast is - truly, the best dinner is Fish Toast, apple slices, and a cup of tea - and also to buying random fish in cans when I encounter something unfamiliar at the grocery store.
Today, I bought roasted eel in a can. I have never eaten eel. It appears to be in some kind of sweet soy sauce and I am extremely excited about trying it.
*Honestly, I should probably give tuna another try. It's just that tuna is one of those foods that I've disliked since early childhood and it would be a whole Thing if I tried it again now, with people staring and asking questions and I just don't want to deal with it. There are lots of other fish in cans I can eat that don't invite that kind of scrutiny.

The tinned eel is Old Fisherman brand - a Taiwanese brand that I gather is pretty readily available if you have a nearby Asian market or a grocery store with a good Asian section. They also have a tinned eel in a fermented black bean sauce, but so far I've only tried the default roasted eel.
The tin I bought contained two filets. Tonight, I had half of a filet mashed up on a piece of buttered bread, which I then toasted. So my eel was warm and crisped up a little.
It is pretty delicious. However, if you really like the taste of eel itself, this may not work for you, as the flavor of the sauce is more prevalent. The eel provides an underlying savoury fishy note. The sauce reminds me a little of a barbecue sauce, with some "Asian" flavor notes - it's sweet and a little spicy. It has cinnamon in it and you can really taste that, but in a good way. The texture of the eel is a little tough - closer to an anchovy or smoked salmon than a sardine.
Again, I don't know from eel, but I really liked this and will definitely be buying it again. I hope that's helpful!
