Hands down, the best textile-based skill I've ever taught myself was learning to darn holes. I love being able to knit my own sweaters and socks - it's great - but being able to mend things both that I made myself or that I bought from a store is even better.
This morning, I have mended holes in one of my favorite cardigans and a tshirt I love. You can barely tell they've been mended at all, they'll last for at least another year of regular wear, and they still look work-appropriate.
I feel very proud of myself.
