darchildre: the fourth doctor's scarft (crafty geek)
Years ago, I had a sweater. Well, a duster-ish cardigan, I suppose. It was a dark pinkish-redish-maroonish color, and made entirely of wool, and warm but not too heavy and I loved it. I wore it all the time in college - it was my favorite sweater ever.

And then it developed holes in both the elbows. This was tragic and I was heartbroken but determined to mend it or patch it, but didn't quite have the skills or resources to do either of those things. So I put it in the back of my closet to wait until I was capable of fixing it. And then I basically forgot about it.

Recently, however, I learned how to darn because one of the socks I had knit developed a tiny hole, which was unacceptable. And yesterday, I was darning something else when I thought, "Hey, I still have that red sweater! I bet I could fix it!" So I dragged it out of the closet and darned the little hole under the right armpit and the two big holes at the elbows and, because the bigger darns didn't look very nice, knit a couple patches to sew over them. So now there is a golden yellow basketweave patch on one elbow and a dark blue cabled patch on the other. There are still a couple little moth holes that I'll probably darn later but right now, I am wearing my favorite sweater again for the first time in years. It makes me very happy.

Sometimes, I think the ability to mend old favorite clothes is more exciting than the ability to create entirely new garments.

Today is a slow day at the library and, since I have too much Christmas knitting in hand to let myself look at knitting patterns, I am looking at recipes.

See, I was planning to make bread this weekend, so I was looking at bread recipes. And then I ended up somehow talking to my coworker about pork belly and I found this recipe for pork belly buns, which looks amazing. And then I was thinking about char siu and how it would be fun to make bao again, and how I kinda want to make pie and what kind of pie should I make? I have a recipe for tiny buttermilk pies, which look adorable, but that made me think about that time I made Queijadas De Sintra, except that I had not previously made my own pie crust at that time and so the crust sucked but I make awesome pie crust now so maybe it's time to revisit them.

Basically, I want to Make All The Things.

What is your favorite pie recipe?
