Warning: I am going to be a curmudgeon for a moment.

Dear teenaged library-goers,

The proper response when I help you find a book, log into the computers, or use the print-release station is not "Uh huh" or "Mm-kay" or a blank stare. The proper response is "Thank you".

Sweet Loki in a fish basket, were you raised by wolves?

It's SO tempting to put a hand up to your ear and say, "I'm sorry, what was that?" or prompting them like a four-year-old.

Of course they weren't raised by wolves. They were raised by the TV and video games. And I agree with Toft: prompt them for a proper response.

My college students say thank you. Most of them do, anyway.

Usually, I can get them to make the proper response with an "Anything Else?" question. Even the most mute of teens will say "No, thanks." out of habit.
