Dear library patron,

If you ask me if a certain dvd is "still floating around the system" and you actually want to know the answer, maybe you should consider not walking away in the middle of the transaction.

Especially if you what you really want is for me to place a hold on the item.

I cannot communicate telepathically with you from across the library and I'm not going to shout.

ETA - Over an hour later, still the same gripe. Why would you walk away in the middle of a transaction before I have given you your change?

People do this to me all the time at the store! They ask where something is, and as I start to explain they walk away, before I even get to the relevant part. I figure they must not really want to know.

I really wonder, sometimes. Maybe they realize the answer as they're asking. Usually, though, I at least signify that I've figured it out somehow. (Forehead slaps are a favorite.)
