My chorale concert is tonight and tomorrow and the choir provides the refreshments, so I am baking cookies. I have found a new and awesome recipe, so I am sharing it with you.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • some additional sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until fluffy. Beat in egg; add molasses. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients in a separate bowl. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture; mix well. Form dough into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar. Arrange 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, then let cool on a wire rack.

(This recipe is by Lisa Ashton of Aston, PA. I found it in the Gooseberry Patch Christmas Book 12.)

The awesome thing about these cookies is that they are really peppery. I love spicy sweets - I adore ginger candy and tend to put way more ginger in baked goods than is originally called for by the recipe. These are a great addition to my normal chocolate ginger cookies, which are equally fabulous.

Do you have any recipes for spicy sweets you'd like to share?

Not quite immediately, but I did just try making them! I totally ignored the '1-inch' instruction and accidentally made them rather huge, but they are DELICIOUS. Undoubtably my most successful cookie making of all time. Thank you so much! I'm taking them to a party tomorrow, I expect to impress.

PS you're totally right about the pepper. Mmmmm. I bought good black pepper for these and I'm glad I did. Also the crunchy sugar on the outside makes them.
