darchildre: the fourth doctor's scarft (crafty geek)

So. The thing about crocheting socks is that I really like doing it. I love to crochet (as you have probably guessed) and socks are the perfect project, as they are portable, infinite in their variations (theoretically), and immediately practical.* You finish them, you put them one, you have a new and (hopefully) exciting pair of socks.

The thing is, though, that the world of crocheted sock patterns has not in any way caught up to the world of knitted socks. If you go browsing the internet or your library's yarncraft section (746.4-ish), you will find hundred of patterns of all sorts. Crochet is still working on, y'know, not being entirely made of granny squares. And I am impatient in that I don't like making the same pattern twice. So the first few are really exciting - I have learned to make a sock! I have learned to make several (okay, three) different kinds of heel! And you learn different textured stitches and then, ooh, how to do cables, and that's all very exciting.

Except that, see, I have done that now. Once I have learned to do something, I have to find some other way to get the pattern to stimulate me, or else I don't finish it.** Which is why I currently have three or four half-finished pairs of socks, languishing in my yarn basket. They're reasonably attractive socks. I would be happy to wear them (even the bubblegum pink ones). I just am not motivated to finish them in any way.

I think I will chart me a pattern for some colorwork socks. Colorwork is still exciting.

*Amigurumi are almost the perfect project because they are certainly the first two but not at all the third.

**This is also a large part of the reason that I've never really gotten into knitting. Because when you're learning it's all "Here is the knit stitch - now you can make a scarf or a dishcloth!" and I am all "Yes, but I want to learn to do Fair Isle". It is a problem.
