Jul. 15th, 2021 02:27 pmThe book I'm currently reading has reached a plot point where the POV character Has a Secret and we are spending a lot of time in the character's head worrying about being Found Out because, if they are, they are going to Get in Trouble and you guys, it is giving me so much anxiety. I am enjoying the book generally and don't to give up on it because of this but it is so hard. If it were visual media, I would be watching through my hands with my ears half-covered, it makes me so uncomfortable. As it is, I can only read about two paragraphs at a time before I have switch to, like, a safe piece of fanfiction or something. (Thank god I am reading this on my tablet and not as a physical book.)
(It is not the absolute worst form of this thing because this instance is not "bodyswapping/some form of doppelganger thing has happened and we must keep everyone around us from knowing but at least one of us is Extremely Bad At It," which I cannot tolerate at all. I love bodyswap stories if they're like the Farscape episode, where everyone knows the whole time, but I find stuff like Freaky Friday entirely unwatchable and had to nope the hell out of Anansi Boys.)
It's so dumb - I have enormous tolerance for unpleasant/squicky horror stuff but none at all for this. God, I hope the character gets Found Out and I can start reading normally again.
