darchildre: a very sad t-rex (i do not know why i am so terrible)

My coworker is considering getting her son a kitten for his birthday and she and the rest of my coworkers are spending the day sharing cat stories and looking at kittens on the Humane Society website and in general, I am so jealous I could spit.

I have loved all of the dogs my family has had over the past few decades and I get that my parents are not interested in figuring out the logistics of adding a cat to our lives right now, but god, I have wanted but haven't had a cat for 20 years. Dogs are great but cats are better-to-me in basically every way - they're softer, more interesting to interact with, make more pleasing sounds, more aesthetically pleasing in general. Usually, I can ignore this vague pet-based dissatisfaction, but hearing other people talking excitedly about their cats is just making me sad today.

Also, there is a beautiful calico on the Humane Society website and she will never be coming home with me and I am despondent.

I will say, from experience, that while introducing an adult cat into a household with a dog can be difficult, it's really not too hard to bring a kitten into a household with a dog, logistically speaking. My mom has done it several times, and it's gone well every time, even with dogs of vastly different temperaments. So have several of my friends.

I mean, it's your life/home, too. You could possibly try fostering, to have a short term trial run to see how it might work, without being 100% committed to keeping said kitten if it did become a logistical nightmare?
