darchildre: a scarecrow with a pumpkin head, looking menacing (halloween)

It is October! I love October - it has two of my favorite holidays (Halloween and Winternights), it gets cooler and darker, I can start wearing sweaters, I can buy a lot of candy and pumpkin-flavored things, and it's spooky time!

However. This year is terrible and I am actually feeling pretty depressed right now. But I refuse not to enjoy October as much as I can. In order to do that, I am planning to watch a whole bunch of horror movies this month.

I am making a list both of stuff I own or stuff I can stream but I would love input from other people. What are your favorite horror movies? What do you like about them?

I am good with any era of film and most subgenres of horror, though I prefer my horror to have a fantastical element to it. I don't mind gore. (While I'm specifically looking for movies right now, I am also happy to get recs for other media if you have them.) I'm looking both for new-to-me movies and good movies to rewatch, so feel free to recommend well-known films if they're things you especially like.

Alien and Aliens - Ripley! Also, imho they've aged pretty well.

Attack the Block - All the actors are terrific (John Boyega and Jodi Whittaker are in this), and I like writing and cinematography.

The Mummy (1999) - I love Evy and Rick's romance and the combination of screwball comedy and horror worked really well for me. At some point I want to watch the Karloff version.

Terminator: Dark Fate - Sarah Connor's back! I love the so much of the film is focused on her, Dani, and Grace.

I love Bride of Frankenstein - it's campy but also quite sharp at points. I haven't seen it in a while, but I really enjoyed it.

I remember loving Mars Attacks, that's another one I enjoyed for its campness. Pretty much all Tim Burton, tbh.

I second Alien - I haven't seen the others but I quite enjoyed it when I wasn't expecting to.

There's also The Others and The Awakening, which are good spooky haunted house films but not big on the horror elements really, just Big Spook

I'm preparing my Halloween-a-Thon and plan on watching as many gialli as I can find. I'm planning on collecting as many Barbara Steele and Edwige Fenech movies as I can find through On Demand. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh looks interesting!

I don't watch a ton of horror (watching more lately, though), but I really enjoyed "Ready or Not"--it's got some predictability but also a nice bit of surprise, and there is a bit of a fantastical streak through it, especially as it progresses.

And both "Us" and "Get Out" were really good, though for different reasons. Us was creepier and scarier and weirder/more fantastical.

On a wholly different side of things, I love to hate/mock-watch Van Helsing. It's such a ridiculous "horror" movie, but I enjoy how it fuses three different monsters.
