darchildreLike many of us right now, I am Very Very Bored. Which is why
a) I started a new knitting project the other day solely to knit something with complicated lace. It is a shawl, it is going to have beads as well, I started it less than a week ago and am nearly done, which is probably the fastest I've ever knit anything. Turns out, if you don't have anything else to do but knit, you get things done a lot faster! That explains those people who can knit a sweater in a week, which I've always sort of unconsciously assumed was lies. I may end up knitting another, different complicated shawl when this one is finished.
b) I ordered a wee embroidery kit from the internet (which arrived today). I have historically been resistant to embroidery because...okay, this may sound weirdly snobbish and I absolutely don't mean it that way, but I don't like doing crafts that produce objects which are purely decorative. It is fine if other people want to do that! But I don't. If I'm going to make something, I need to be able to do something with it. I like beautiful things but I also want them to be functional things. My sister does cross stitch - she makes these big, beautiful things that are very impressive but then it's like, "What do I do with this?" So it's not something I've ever really been into. But now I am very bored and also I use a lot of handkerchiefs and it occurred to me that, once I know how to embroider, there is nothing to stop me from embroidering weird and offputting things on all of my handkerchiefs. Which are useful objects, and thus worth my crafting time to make them pretty. But first, I will embroider a random moth in order to Learn Skills.
