The truest sign of how long I've been working in the same library:

I can, while checking in books out of the backroom bookdrop (and thus cannot see any of the people involved), identify those books that are being returned by a good dozen of our regular patrons by smell alone.

(Most of them are various combinations of "cigarette smoke + products to mask cigarette smoke." Catlitter-Man has recently moved to a different library. I am constantly concerned about the elderly woman who always smells strongly of barbecued pork.)
