Oct. 11th, 2019 06:32 pmToday I started reading T Kingfisher's The Twisted Ones, which I had put on hold some time ago and about which I didn't remember anything other than the fact that I had been assured that the dog didn't die.
You guys, there is a certain and very specific joy to noticing a reference in one work to another work and then having it confirmed and I would not steal that joy from anyone so the fact that The Twisted Ones so it goes behind a cut: this is a Machen book! In that our protagonist has stumbled straight into The White People, if it were set in North Carolina rather than the UK!
I can find Lovecraftian out the wazoo and there's plenty of Chambers stuff anymore but books that play with Machen-horrors are rare and to be treasured. I'm trying to think of one other than T E D Klein's The Ceremonies and this one probably won't have any of the weird 80s-horror sex stuff.
I am stupidly happy about this.
