I think my favorite thing about the Oysterband & June Tabor recording of Dives and Lazarus is not the fact that it is eminently singable or that the instrumentation goes significantly harder than one would except of a Child ballad based on a Biblical parable, but the fact that the final stanza is:

Hell is dark, Hell is deep
Hell is FULL OF MICE
It's a pity that any poor sinful soul
Should be barred from our savior, Christ

I do not in any way blame the singers for this - I'm absolutely sure that this is a traditional line - but, c'mon, old-timey people! Surely there are better rhymes for the word "Christ" out there!

I mean, it's certainly more appealing than many of the more common depictions of Hell.
