darchildre: rebis in a purple trenchcoat, looking enigmatic (rebis says:)
[personal profile] darchildre
I've been saying for years that the one comicbook adaptation I want about all other is Doom Patrol so, since DC is actually making a Doom Patrol tv show and the first episode became available last night, I was contractually obligated to watch it.

Mr Nobody's narration is a little too winkingly ironic for my taste and I personally could have done without the sex scenes, but I think the core of the show has potential. This ep mainly focused on Cliff Steele, which is fair, as Cliff is kind of the solid everyman core of the Doom Patrol, but we got to touch at least a little on Rita and Larry and Jane, in ways that make me hopeful that they'll be developed into pretty cool characters. I am also glad that it's clear even from the pilot that the Chief may seem nice but that he is absolutely in no way to be trusted.

The pilot is neither as weird or as queer* as I'd have ideally preferred the show to be (my Doom Patrol is always Morrison's Doom Patrol which is hella weird and hella queer), but we got touches of that too. Mr Nobody is, indeed, pretty damn weird (and realized pretty well visually, I think) and Larry is canonically some flavor of mlm, so that's something. I think there's room for development there too.

I'm not sure how much more of the DCU exists around these characters? I mean, the Chief just blithely said that Jane has superpowers but it's not clear if superpowers are a thing that people know about. I hope there's some clarification about that as we continue.

Things I would like this show to give me as we move on:
- Danny the Street. I will accept even just one sign saying "Bona to vada!" in a shop window.
- Flex Mentallo, oh my god.
- Please, I just want to see a robot tenderly making out with a talking gorilla on my tv screen.
- I mean. Rebis. Larry is great and all but I want Rebis.

I will likely not get any of those things, but I'm probably still going to keep watching. I like this so far.

Also, I'm going to have to add this to my comics reread.

*Because we don't have Rebis, my beautiful genderqueer terrifying ouroborus. I miss them in Doom Patrols that are not Grant Morrison's.
