Friends, can you point me towards some novels (ideally aimed at adults) with unicorns in them? Preferably unicorns who are actual characters and not just super rad horses?

I would very much appreciate it.

I can't. The only adult book I've read them in wa drivers of London series, and they weren't characters so much as great big horses with deadly long spikes on their forehead, galloping after you. I'd never thought of unicorns as scary until reading that.

I just finished reading Background Pony by ShortSkirtsAndExplosions which, surprisingly enough, was recommended on the latest Boston University holiday reading list. The Amazon listing is a dud for getting it in print. I have it in print (or I would not have read it) and the print run was of only 64 copies. The gist of the story is that a unicorn bumps into a living nightmare and is cursed with a reverse amnesia. No other living entity can remember her for more than a few hours at best. It's a tale of coping, trying to beat the curse and about making the world a better place.

While I wait for the next book on my reading list to get printed, I'm rereading Fallout Equestria, which is also aimed at adults. The protagonist is a unicorn and I enjoyed the book a lot even though I never played Fallout (the game). There is quite a bit of gore and many unpleasant characters, who generally meet messy ends.

Of course FiMFiction is stuffed with more novels featuring unicorns and other ponies than you could ever hope to read, but you could consult the Royal Canterlot Library for recommended reading.
