Okay, so:

Ash has discovered that one of the Carthaginian generals is her exact twin and also maybe hears saints' voices in her head giving her tactical advice on the battlefield and also possibly the saints are actually some kind of computer? Possibly designed by Roger Bacon, y'know, the wizard? (Or possibly there's a tactical computer that talks in saints' voices and also Rober Bacon's Brazen Head?)

Plus the sun has been out for three weeks now and all the insects are dying off. (There was a beautiful moment where she realized that her horse was stepping on a sheet of insects, dead of the cold, covering the road.) It's not clear if the sun has ceased shining everywhere or just on the part of Europe the story is currently set in.
