As previously noted, I am currently reading Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle.
You guys, it was hard enough to put this book down after my lunch break and get back to work in the beginning, when it was just a story about a mercenary captain in medieval Europe with some weird not-our-world variations on Catholicism*.
But now! First there were Visigoths living Carthage in the 1400's which, that's unexpected. And then it turns out that they live "Under the Penance", which appears to be some sort of eternal twilight/night? And the Visigoths have golems? And now these Carthaginian Visigoths have invaded Europe in order to conquer Burgundy specifically and their ambassador (who has gone mad) made the sun go out?!
At the point when my lunch break ended, the sun had been dark for 12 days and the Holy Roman Emperor had just surrendered to the Visigoths.
How am I supposed to concentrate on library stuff when I could be reading this book instead?
*I am hoping really hard that at some point, the book will give me more information on these variations because I am fascinated. We've had mentions of a "Green Christ", a "Briar Cross", a "Bull" and a "Boar" and I desperately need to know what's going on with that.
If every fantasy novel with cool religious worldbuilding could just put an appendix in the back where they detail that religion, I would be supremely grateful.

It's a war story, and contains both violence and rape. Neither have been terribly explicit - not near as bad as, say, George R R Martin - but they're definitely present.)
