darchildre: second doctor playing solitaire (bored now)

I have been feeling kinda blah for the last couple days and this morning I realized that part of it is because I don't currently have a Story. Most of the time, I have a persistent daydream story that plays in the back of my mind while I'm doing other things and that I can actively think about when I'm bored. But the inspiration for the last one has now dried up and I'm left replaying bits of the story that I've "seen" dozens of times already and I need a new one.

Most of my stories have their origins in fandom of some sort, even if I end up filing the serial numbers off and the story becomes wildly AU. I don't currently have a fannish obsession either, which is probably why I don't have a new story.

Thus - friends, do you want to rec me a fannish obsession? I don't actually need a fandom, per se, though consumable fanworks are of course definitely a plus. I'm kinda in the mood for fantastical-leaning-towards-high-fantasy, but I'm open to recs of all kinds. Bonus points for compelling villains (because of course, have you met me?).

What are you guys into that could produce fun daydream stories?

For sheer daydreams, I've been enjoying an A/B/O AU As the Summer Rains Fall. It's delightfully overwrought and melodramatic, and it is one of those stories that I'll happily daydream different scenarios for -- how I would write a happy end here, or extra angst there. Not stories I'd ever write or could make work as a serious narrative, but daydreams I indulge in or stories I tell myself as I'm falling asleep.

Oh boy. I've been watching the history channel's Project Blue Book, which has been 100% for great daydream fodder.

I'm gonna highly recommend Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold from Once Upon a Time. I mainly recommend seasons 1-2, with a hard stop at the midpoint of season 3 (after that the show goes downhill, and there's a natural end to the story at that point). He's not the only compelling villain, but he's best. And there are reams upon reams of Rumplestiltskin fanworks to enjoy, most of which are quite good.

If you want a reading-type thing, Frances Hardinge's A Face Like Glass is definitely fantastical leaning towards high fantasy, and has so much potential for daydreaming/wild AUs, etc.

As a fandom, The Dragon Prince seems to be hitting that button for a lot of people. It's not quite a Campbellian sword and board adventure, but it's got all the possibilities of one...if the main characters weren't an elf, a mage, and a kid who can talk to animals, that is.

I usually don't have one story but several, but not/rarely at the moment because I'm not really "in" any fandom at the moment. I miss that. Sometimes I make plans for my D&D party, that's fun.
