Aug. 23rd, 2020 08:13 amDespite the fact that I have a couple solo RPG campaigns in progress, yesterday I got bored and started another one because I wanted to play Ironsworn. Which I downloaded and read ages ago but had not played.
Y'all, Ironsworn is pretty rad. The default setting is a fairly grim mildly-Norse-myth-inspired low-magic fantasy world, but the rules are flexible enough that you could do a lot of different stuff with it. (Looking around casually, I have already found hacks for Star Wars Ironsworn and Weird West Ironsworn.) The mechanics are fairly easy to get your head around, especially if you've been exposed to other Powered by the Apocalypse games. And the game is specifically designed for solo play - you can also play in a group, with a GM or not as you like, but the default experience is meant for one player running it by themself. After spending some time rejiggering various games built for group experiences so that I can play them by myself, it's really cool to have a game this good that's built for what I want to do with it.
Also - it is free! You do have to pay money if you want a physical book, or if you want the Delve expansion, but the base game is free to download.
Anyway. I played for about two hours yesterday - built a character (I have a dog!), started a quest, fought some monsters, nearly died, and found an ancient elven tomb that I'll start exploring next session. It was great.
