darchildre: (natasha does not have time for this shit)
We have this patron who only checks out movies. And he only likes very specific types of films - he likes action, westerns, and swashbuckling and he doesn't like black-and-white, subtitles, or anything rated above PG-13. So he's seen most of the movies in our collection that fit his requirements, some of them several times.

Thus, he's recently started branching out into new ways to find new movies. First, he started by having us look up actors and putting whatever sounded interesting out of their filmography on hold. Then, a couple weeks ago, he started on directors*.

Today, he has started finding random books that he thinks look interesting, bringing them up to the counter, and asking if there are movies based on them.

Alas that recommending he read the books doesn't work.

*Well, technically, he started by trying screenwriters but that didn't work out terribly well.
darchildre: the master reading war of the worlds (reading)
Today marks the second time I have given up on a book solely due to the author's quirky grammatical choices.

The first one was The Road because, I'm sorry, I cannot deal with the lack of quotation marks. Today's book is Finch by John VanderMeer which I really want to like. It is a murder mystery set in a city that has been taken over by mushroom people. Mushroom people! That is amazing and wonderful. Alas, Mr VanderMeer apparently believes that if you have 5 sentences, at least four of them should be sentence fragments. I don't know, guys, I like verbs. Reading 8 sentence fragments in a row makes me feel like I'm reading some kind of bad poem, not narrative prose. I made halfway though chapter 2 and gave up.

I don't suppose any of you can think of any other books with mushroom people, can you?
