We have this patron who only checks out movies. And he only likes very specific types of films - he likes action, westerns, and swashbuckling and he doesn't like black-and-white, subtitles, or anything rated above PG-13. So he's seen most of the movies in our collection that fit his requirements, some of them several times.

Thus, he's recently started branching out into new ways to find new movies. First, he started by having us look up actors and putting whatever sounded interesting out of their filmography on hold. Then, a couple weeks ago, he started on directors*.

Today, he has started finding random books that he thinks look interesting, bringing them up to the counter, and asking if there are movies based on them.

Alas that recommending he read the books doesn't work.





*Well, technically, he started by trying screenwriters but that didn't work out terribly well.

Good grief. I mean, I like movies as much as the next person but. When you get to the point where you are ... finding books to find movies based on ... why would you not OPEN the book?

To be fair to him, I think he probably has some mental issues. I know he can read, because he reads movie titles and, sometimes, the backs of dvd cases, but I don't know how easy it is for him.

But yeah. We can get you audiobooks or something, if the physical act of reading is difficult for you.

Have you suggested audiobooks?

The other thing to suggest when suggesting audiobooks is to explain them that they're like movies with more words and less pictures. Though perhaps the visual aspect of the movies interests him as much as the storyline, and such.

We have suggested audiobooks and indeed once spent a couple hours one day when we didn't have any movies he wanted trying to find audiobooks that would appeal to him. He seemed intrigued, looked at them, and then left without checking them out. And came back the next day to look at movies again.

He is a challenge.

My first thought was why doesn't he open the book? But then I wondered if he can read. I can't even imagine not being able to read, but at least he's at the library and broadening his interests.

I know he can read but I don't know how easy it is for him. I really wish we could put him on to audiobooks or something but, like I said above, it doesn't seem to take.
