All right, the bread dough is made and rising!

Today, I am making broa, which is a kind of Portuguese yeasted corn bread. Because a) I have not made it before and I love corn breads, and b) every heathen holiday is a good holiday on which to honor and remember one's ancestors. I'm using the Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day cookbook, so it's probably not terribly traditional broa, but broa it remains. I've halved the recipe from the book, so it should make one loaf today and one for later in the week, which is exciting.

And now I must go to the store in order to get things for the rest of today's crazy amount of cooking.

All right - brown sugar pie's in the oven (smells delicious), candy is cooling, and the bread is on its second rise in the loaf pan.

To share recipes:

Brown sugar pie. I find that it needs to bake considerably more than the recipe says, but it may be that I've overfilled the pie shell. Either way, it's a delicious and very easy pie.

Lime jelly candy. The tiny bit of this I've tasted is quite good. I'll admit that I added a few drops of green food coloring, just for fun.

An addendum, re: the jelly candy.

So, it was supposed to set for two hours, after which I was supposed to cut it, dredge the pieces in sugar, and then let them set further over night. Well, two hours passed, I cut it and attempted to get a piece out of the pan but it had not set hardly at all. It was gooey sludge. I put it in the fridge for an hour, thinking that might help it set, but no. Still gooey sludge. I ate a piece of the sludge and, unfortunately, I can taste the applesauce much more than the lime. (If you like applesauce, this is probably not a problem. I do not like applesauce.)

So that was a failure. Alas! But the pie looks excellent and the bread is fantastic and the apples are going to be great (because I've made them several times before and they're hard to screw up). So I am 75% awesome for today.

And I have a good bit of pectin left. Maybe next weekend, I will attempt to make jam.

You guys, you really should make the brown sugar pie I linked to earlier. Seriously, you will not be sad that you did so - it is amazing. Also, it is incredibly easy to make. One bowl and a pie crust, that is all you need, you can make it in the time it takes for the oven to heat, and then you have pie that is completely awesome.

Especially if you heat it up and melt vanilla ice cream over it. 8)
