May. 18th, 2009 08:43 pmI am not updatey of late. Sorry. Things of recently!
- Tonight, I went to the book group to talk about Dracula. It was ridiculously fun. I occasionally forget how much I like discussing books with people, if they are books I like and fun/intelligent people. And, well, I am willing to talk about Dracula for hours to anyone, really. 8) We talked about how Mina is totally badass and how Dracula does things that are actually really stupid if you stop to think about them and how my gods, those blood transfusions should never have worked! And sexual symbolism and religious imagery and all that good stuff. My ridiculous and obsessive knowledge of the book (and certain of the movies) paid off and I got to pimp Hollywood Gothic at people. There were people there who had never even seen a Dracula movie. How do you even do that? I mean, I know I am crazy vampire freak girl who read 19th century vampire stories at a ridiculously young age but dude. Dracula. Still, book group was awesome and next month we are reading the Odyssey. I will not be able to be all expert at that one, alas, but it will still be fun.
- Turns out, I really like book groups. I just don't like the books that I always see our regular book group reading. Hopefully, the classics book group will remain more appealing, even through our probably inevitable reading of Hemingway.
- Also! Not unrelatedly, I have been rereading Dracula. (Who would have guessed?) Which I haven't done in quite a while and has been quite fun. It's weird how one's opinions of things in one's favorite books change over time. For instance, I spent most of the book thinking Quincey was totally rockin' and that I wanted to slap Dr Seward. Which has never happened before. I still love Renfield best though, so some things are apparently changeless.
- I also finally got around to reading Bartleby the Scrivener this weekend, which I've been meaning to do ever since...when did Bag of Bones come out? (Damn you, Stephen King, and your references to other books!) I am pretty certain that I liked Bartleby but not at all sure that I get it. I think I will have to read it again. It makes me want to read Kafka, which I've also meant to do for a while and never gotten around to.
- This coming weekend, on a non-literature-related, my family is finally starting our D&D game. Which should be exciting. Mom, Katie and Eddy are all totally stoked and I think that we might even get Dad to be at least a little excited. I shall have to get pizza and root beer in order to start things off traditionally.
So that has been me of late. Since it has mostly been spent reading, it explains why I'm not posting, right? 8)
