So, we're coming up on New Years Day which is the holiday about which my family has the most outright superstitious traditions. The main two are:
- We make black eyed peas every year. The more black eyed peas you eat on New Years, the luckier you'll be in the new year. (I derive my luck from other sources, as I have never eaten black eyed peas. There are a lot of traditional southern foods I am more than willing to eat - I will take all of your saltiest country ham, please and thank you - but those are not one of them.)
- There is to be no laundry done on New Years Day. Washing clothes on New Years is terribly bad luck.
The black eyed peas thing is fairly common, but no one in my family knows the origin of the laundry thing. I mean, we know it came from my dad's family but where his parents got it from and why you can't wash clothes on New Years is a mystery. You'd think it would be the other way around, that you'd want to get everything clean and fresh to attract good luck. Still, no one in my family would dream of doing laundry on January 1st.
I find these kinds of things really interesting. Do your families have superstitious traditions - not just about New Years, but in general?
