Tonight, my family and I finished watching season three of Game of Thrones.

One of the great joys of watching Game of Thrones with my parents is that there are a lot of characters with a lot of names and my parents do not know them all. (My dad, for example, has just now gotten down what Cersei and Sansa's names are.) So, sometimes, they make up new names, or make weird little joke-names for the characters they can't quite remember.

My favorite of these is the one that my mom just came up with. See, there are these Madeirense desserts called malasadas*, and apparently, that's what my mom hears whenever I say Melisandre's name. So now, whenever Melisandre comes on screen, my mom says something along the lines of, "Oh, look, it's Lady Donut."

*Which are apparently a Shrove Tuesday tradition, much like pancakes in the UK. I am not any kind of Christian, nor do I know a whole lot about my Portuguese/Madeirense heritage**, but I am totally down with adopting a traditional yearly holiday that involves homemade donuts. Alas that I did not learn this fact earlier.

I suppose there's nothing stopping me from trying to make homemade Portuguese donuts without the excuse of a holiday.

**Mostly, I know that we eat linguiƧa and kale soup and that my dad (who is not the Portuguese one) keeps suggesting that we try bacalhau. And that we have a lot of ceramic roosters in the house.
