Today, in "Sara Doesn't Know How to Talk Like a Human Being":

So, when I'm at work and someone comes in and says, "I haven't seen you in a while!" when I have, in fact, been coming in for all my normal shifts and they just haven't come in while I've been working - what is the desired response on the part of that person? Because all the things I ever think of to say in response to that seem weird and awkward. This is not something it would ever occur to me to say to someone*, so I honestly don't know what's expected of me here.

Eurgh, small talk is so difficult.

*Not that it is a wrong thing to say - it's just not something I would say.

A Generally Accepted Response is something to the order of "It's nice to see you again, too.", as the comment is intended to express happiness that you are still alive and working at your workplace, and that they feel friendship or comradeship toward you.

Also usually acceptable is a self-deprecating "Still here."

If they seem of the amuseable sort you could say something along the lines of "Inherited an invisibility cloak but its at the cleaners today."
