One of our frequent patrons (who is also one of the Friends of the Library and helps with donations) came in and had a book on the I Ching on hold. She started talking to me about divination systems - she reads tarot casually and wanted to learn about other systems.

So I mentioned that I read runes sometimes. "Oh, I have a set of runes!" she said. "I found them in the donated books and took them home*, but I don't know anything about them. What are they - are they Arabic?"

I will admit that I blinked at her for several seconds before answering.

*This weirds me out for reasons that I cannot quite explain. But then, I have never owned a set of runes that I didn't make in some way - mine have always been either hand-carved or hand-colored. I mean, obviously there's nothing wrong with using runes that someone else made if that works for you, but I just can't do it. And using runes that you just found and don't know the provenance of just seems freaky to me.

I'm also a bit weirded out about that. Mostly because I'd be worried about someone using a divinatory tool without having done a cleansing or obtaining the permission of the owner to use their tools. And having them drop into the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are? Must mean they were meant for them. (Or that the mojo on them is pretty weird.)
