May. 27th, 2011 06:38 pmGot up this morning at 3:30 in order to get to the airport for a 7:10 flight. Which was then delayed about an hour. This was kind of a problem, as I had to make a connecting flight in Minneapolis and only had a 45 minute layover. However, I have a weird, Lokean kind of luck with travel, wherein things go wrong only to have them fix themselves in ridiculous and semi-miraculous ways. In this case, the second flight was delayed fifteen minutes, which was just long enough for me to run like the devil from one concourse to another and get on the plane with five minutes to spare.
Got to Madison, got to my hotel, changed out of airplane clothes and made my way to the con. I got there at about 4, which meant I didn't have time to go an afternoon panel, but I wandered around the dealer's room and looked at fliers and planned the things I wanted to go to for the rest of the weekend. I've never actually been to a geeky thing that wasn't in the Northwest - looking at fliers is a little depressing because there's all this cool stuff that I'd love to go to and then I notice that it's in Chicago and really, one trip to the Midwest per year is enough for me, I think.
About 5:30 they had this really nice thing where the Wiscon newbies meet up and go to dinner together, so I did that. I was social! I talked to people! People who seemed to actually be interested in listening to me talk about horror films! (I'm always vaguely surprised a) when that happens, b) how knowledgeable I sound when I do that. It's kinda cool.) We went to a pub where they make their own ginger ale and it was pretty awesome. Flying and changing time zones screws with my eating schedule, so I wasn't terribly hungry and just ordered bread and honey butter, which was fantastic.
Then back to the con hotel for opening ceremonies. Which was fun. The overall impression I have so far of Wiscon is that it is a con that tries very hard to make everyone welcome. It's a very friendly-feeling place.
There weren't any evening panels I particularly wanted to go to and I was kinda getting tired. So I walked back to my hotel and now, maybe, I'm going to take a bath or something and have a relaxing evening.
And that has been my Friday of Wiscon Weekend.
