Jun. 14th, 2010 10:51 amSo. Next weekend, la familia and I are going away. Just for the weekend, but still. Going away. And, y'know, I am the kind of person who, if they are leaving the house to run errands and will be alternately driving a car and in the grocery store, will have a book. Just in case. Going away for the afternoon usually means a couple of paperbacks. One of them might turn out to be boring! A weekend usually means four (and, if we end up in a used bookstore, I tend to buy more). The last time I went away for the weekend, I brought four paperbacks and my kindle.
Obviously, this is ridiculous. And takes up too much space. So, since I am not currently engaged in any reading that is really catching my interest, necessitating that I bring that particular book with me, I am planning on just bringing my kindle. After filling it full of fanfiction. So I am going through my tobereadlater tag on del.icio.us and finding stuff that looks fun. And I am also asking you for recommendations.
So, do you have any fic that you particularly like that you want to recommend to me? I am especially looking for long stories. Fandom isn't really a factor, as I'm willing to play the "learn about the fandom from the fic" game. I tend toward slash but am perfectly willing to read het or femslash or gen. And I would prefer happy endings, though I don't mind angst and pain on the way there.
Any takers?

Date: 2010-06-14 11:25 pm (UTC)So all I've got in the way of really long is:
The Kids Aren't All Right, and The Fullest Possible Use from this page (http://www.butcheredart.net/fiction.html). The first is the mother of all mediafic in the Iron Man universe and a fantastic (if sort of dense and very righteous) refresher on the movie. The Fullest Possible Use is sort of a sequel. It has truly amazing Tony Stark/Jim Rhodes slash, NC-17. The third Iron Man story on that page is also long, but it's an ungodly Mary Sue self-insert abomination that is sort of the case-in-point for why A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DISTANCE IS A GREAT THING.
Almost No One Makes it Out (http://atrata.dreamwidth.org/91903.html?#cutid1) is a glory of a fic, one you've gotten grounded in the Iron Man fandom (and startlingly good otherwise). It's sort of a re-imagining of what if Tony Stark hadn't been born richer than God.
Concession (http://obsession-inc.dreamwidth.org/82848.html?#cutid1) Ah, long, creepy crazy fic with slow-building tension, great OC's, and lots of legwork. I don't know if you'd call the ending necessarily happy, but I find it pretty satisfying.
And just in case you've never read it, astolat's Master and Commander (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/#Master & Commander) fic. The longer Five Things that Never Happened fic is a lot of fun even if you don't know anything about the underlying canon.
