I wore the Bride of Frankenstein necklace my Mom made for me to work to day. People ask me about it and then are always surprised when I tell them that it's my favorite movie in the whole world. Honestly, I'm always a little surprised when I find out that people haven't seen it. Especially people who habitually check out a lot of movies.
And, okay, mostly I'm aware that the vast majority of people have no interest in horror movies from the 30's. I don't understand that, but I'm aware of it. And I am also aware that I don't actually know anyone in-real-life who's seen Bride that I didn't sit down and make them watch it. (I would apologize, but I feel that those people's lives have only been enhanced by my efforts. There are films I should apologize for - and Marc, I really am sorry for making you watch Castle Freak, but hell, you made me watch The Breed - but Bride is not one of them.) Still, I am always a little taken aback when I find out people haven't seen it. It just feels like something that people should have watched. Also the 1931 Dracula.
...half of you are going to tell me that you haven't seen it now, aren't you. Alas, this is the internet and I cannot make all of you come to my house.
Ideally, we would find ourselves a day when we didn't have anything else to do and have a Frankenstein party. We'd get the first three Universal Frankenstein films* (the ones with Boris Karloff - Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein) and watch them. There would be snacks and lots of people. We'd make fun of the goofy bits, yell at Henry for being a deadbeat dad, ogle Elsa Lanchester. We could pass around my stuffed Frankenstein's monster for when the monster needs hugs and I could talk about how the castle in Son of Frankenstein is basically my dreamhome. (Those staircases!) It would be great and wouldn't even take that long - the longest of those three films tops out at 99 minutes.
And then we'd watch Young Frankenstein.
But since this is the internet and I cannot drag you all to my house, you will have to party by yourselves. You wouldn't regret it, I promise.
I think I have to find a day to do it again myself.
*Ghost and House can be extra credit, as can various films starring Peter Cushing. But if we go down that road, I start recommending films like The Black Cat or The Bodysnatcher for extra Karloff-y goodness and other things with Peter Cushing and eventually we get far enough afield that I start talking about double features of Bride of Frankenstein and Bride of Re-Animator so that I can play compare-and-contrast** and maybe that is a post for another time.
**Dan makes a very bad Henry Frankenstein stand-in but I will admit that I kinda want to lock Herbert West and Dr Pretorius in a room together, just to see what kind of crazy would result. ...I'm going to be thinking about that all night.
