Difficult as it may be to believe, even at the Kingston library (which is the size of my kitchen), we don't know all of our patrons by name. We certainly don't remember everything each of them has on our hold shelves at any given time. We are only human.
Perhaps, when the library is run by robots, you will be able to come up to the desk and merely speak the title of the book you've put on hold without any other identifying information and the robot will be able to tell you the status of your hold. Until that day, the meatsacks working at the desk still need your name.
