You guys, Halloween is next week. How did that happen?

And so, in response, this morning has been Decorate Sara's Altar for Halloween/Winternights Day. So now it is clean and dusted (and wow, I need to get/make a new altar cloth - this one is somewhat covered in wax stains...) and has appropriate things on it. By which I mostly mean little tin Dia de los Muertos figures. 8) There's also a little figure that I made out of air dry clay last year to symbolize Ask and Embla, for all my ancestors whose names I don't know, stretching back and back to the beginning of things. And there's a dried rose from my Nana's funeral. (Whenever I think of my disir or pray to them, she's the one I visualize. She was a devout Baptist and she might be offended to know that but what I know is that she was a strong woman who loved her family and for that I want to honor her memory.)

So that's the religious part of the holiday prepared for. Now, scary stories! The one I have to recommend right now is Wormwood. It's a serialized horror/mystery podcast about Dr Xander Crow (I guess you would call him an occult investigator?) and his adventures in the small and mysterious town of Wormwood. I'm about 13 episodes in and it's fantastic. The acting is quite good and the show is very well put together and the story is great. There's murder and ghosts and mud monsters and creepy children and mobsters and graverobbing and possibly a mysterious cult. What more could you want? The episodes are only about 20 minutes long and they're free, so checking it out doesn't mean making a big commitment, though I do recommend sticking around till episode two, just to get a proper feel for things.

Do you have any scary stories to recommend?
