La familia and I went to see Wicked in Seattle yesterday, which was pretty darn nifty. In regards to that, I have things I would like to mention.

- It occurs to me that all of the Oz books are in public domain. And that I believe all of them are up at Project Gutenberg. Which means that they can all be put on my Kindle and I should definitely get around to doing that.

- So, I have read something like half of Wicked something like four different times. I find that reading the book is an odd and unpleasant experience, like reading through vaseline or when one has a severe cold. I've never actually read another book that has the same effect and it's happened every time I've picked it up, so I've never finished it. However, I find the setting interesting and so I have a question. I know there are sequels (there's three books now, right?). Do any of them involve Ozma? Because Tip's story in this Oz would potentially be worth trying to slog through the first book again to get to.

- For the last several months, I've kept having recurring thoughts about female monsters and how it's so hard to find ones that aren't about how sex or pregnancy. Because that's irritating. Last night, I realized that I had been very silly and had completely ignored the one really archetypal female monster we've got: the Witch. Whose ability to inspire fear has nothing to do with sex or reproduction. The Witch is scary because she has power. This is pleasing to me. (And of course you can find her in Oz, which is chock full of kickass awesome powerful women.) Anyone have some Witch stories to recommend?

- I like the musical very much, generally. However, the thing where we find out that the Wizard is Elphaba's father at the end of the play is ridiculous and stupid. For one thing, it's unnecessarily cliche and for another, it forcible reminds the audience of the stupid green elixir thing which hopefully they had forgotten by the finale. Still, that's really the only place where I found myself thinking, "Did we really have to do that?" It's a fun show and well-worth seeing, I think.
