In the Fox News recording of Donald Trump's 7/8/2025 cabinet meeting, at around 17:33, there's a Walt Whitman-esque description of various historical U.S. raids on Iran, culminating in an interesting example of how to define a word by repeating it with emphatic voice quality.
Here's a bit of the context:
I mean if you compare that to
the same country
the hostages from
years ago
Jimmy Carter it was unfortunate for Jimmy Carter he was a nice man but
with the helicopters going down
the sandstorms the
prisoners they got captured
then the election
and the prisoners
and Reagan and all the prob-
it was nothing but problems and uh
and that was a failure and ours was
not only the pilots I mean
those machines flew for thirty seven straight hours they didn't stop.
They went skedaddle
you know the word skedaddle?
It means skedaddle.
They dropped the bombs
and they c-
and somebody said skedaddle
let's get the hell out of here
and every bomb hit its mark
uh and hit it beaut-
hit it incredibly
Of soldiers, troops, etc.: To retreat or retire hastily or precipitately; to flee.
Originally U.S. military slang, introduced during the Civil War of 1861–5.
with a first citation from the New York Tribune in August of 1861:
No sooner did the traitors discover their approach than they ‘skiddaddled’, (a phrase the Union boys up here apply to the good use the seceshers make of their legs in time of danger).
The etymology is given as "probably a fanciful formation", where I guess "fanciful" means "onomatopoetic"? But Wikipedia sez that it's
Possibly an alteration of British dialect scaddle (“to run off in a fright”), from the adjective scaddle (“wild, timid, skittish”), from Middle English scathel, skadylle (“harmful, fierce, wild”), perhaps of North Germanic/Scandinavian origin, from Old Norse *sköþull; or from Old English *scaþol, *sceaþol (see scathel); akin to Old Norse skaði (“harm”). Possibly related to the Ancient Greek σκέδασις (skédasis, “scattering”), σκεδασμός (skedasmós, “dispersion”). Possibly related to scud or scat. It is possibly a corruption of "Let's get outa here".

If you hate how everything in a living room revolves around a TV, Samsung's The Frame TV—which doubles as artwork—might be for you. And during Prime Day, it’s down to its lowest price ever: At around 50% off, you can get a 2024 55-inch The Frame TV for just under $800—that’s down from its regular price of $1,498.
The Frame TV comes with a matte anti-reflection coating that reduces the glare and reflections. So even when it’s off, or in art mode, it looks like a painting. The Art Mode can cycle through famous paintings, or your own photos. The Frame TV comes with a frame that looks like a wooden framing for a picture (which itself is customizable, and easy to swap thanks to magnets). It's also quite thin, so it can blend in with any kind of decor.
The TV part of it is also quite respectable. It supports 120Hz refresh rate for gaming, and has HDR10+ support and smart TV features. The 40W speakers support Dolby Atmos as well. The TV uses a OneConnect Box that features all the port connections and the power adopter in one box, which you can hide away in your cabinet. Only a single cable goes to the Frame TV, which is why it’s so thin at just about 1-inch.
The issue with recommending The Frame TV was always the price. At $1,500, it felt too expensive for the TV part. At $800, it’s much more reasonable.

Great news for cyclists: One of Garmin's best GPS bike computers, the Edge 1040, is currently available for $399.99. That's a 33% discount off its regular price of $599.99. The Edge 1040 is known for its versatility compared to more barebones bike computers. It includes preloaded maps and routing capabilities that work seamlessly across different terrain types. It can suggest alternate routes, provide turn-by-turn directions, and even offer insights about upcoming climbs or hazards.
Constantly checking your watch while biking isn't just unwieldy—it's dangerous. This sort of bike computer makes sense for any cyclist who wants detailed performance metrics and navigation capabilities, whether you're relying on GPS in challenging terrain or simply exploring new routes in your hometown.
According to Garmin, the Edge 1040 uses multi-band GNSS technology to lock onto satellites quickly and maintain precise positioning even in challenging environments, like dense forests or urban environments with tall buildings.
Beyond basic metrics, the Edge 1040 offers comprehensive training and insights, and can even suggest workouts based on your fitness level and goals. For competitive cyclists or those serious about improvement, these features transform the device from a simple computer into a personal coaching tool. Today's discount makes professional-grade cycling technology more accessible to a broader range of cyclists.
And for mountain bikers, check out Garmin's new cycling computer specifically tailored for you: The Edge MTB.

The Eufy Video Smart Lock E330 tries to do a lot, and surprisingly, it does most of it well. Now down to $189.98 for Prime Day (from its usual $299.99), this hybrid device is part doorbell, part security camera, and part keyless lock. The fingerprint scanner, camera, touchpad, and doorbell are all built into a single, clean-looking panel. Even the keyhole is hidden behind the doorbell button. It’s the kind of gadget that sounds gimmicky until you realize how seamlessly it blends into daily life. PCMag even called it the best smart lock of 2023, praising both its versatility and strong performance.
What makes the E330 stand out is how many ways it gives you to get inside your house. You can unlock your door using a fingerprint, PIN code, the app, your voice via Alexa or Google Assistant, or just a regular key. As for the video quality, its built-in 2K camera is sharp enough to recognize faces, and the dual motion sensors (PIR and radar) do a solid job of telling people apart from passing cars, notes this PCMag review. Video is stored locally with 8GB of onboard memory, but it also works with Eufy’s HomeBase 3, which lets you expand storage up to a whopping 16TB if needed. And since it comes with IP65 weather resistance, you don’t need to worry about dust or rain messing with its electronics. The battery is rechargeable and should last around four months between charges, depending on usage. And while the E330 doesn’t support Apple HomeKit or IFTTT, it makes up for that with solid performance and a simple app that lets you control everything from access codes to motion alerts.

Trees, both giant and small, are silent spectators to the passing of not just years but decades and centuries. They stand still and strong as the world keeps changing around them. It shouldn’t be surprising then, that trees and forests—giant systems working as a collective force, generating both life and death—often seem to possess a particular magic, or serve as the home to spirits who are sometimes wise and kind, and sometimes… less benevolent. Trees, forests, and the spirits who inhabit them play a memorable role in many speculative tales, as in the following examples:
Sarah Beth Durst’s world is at once beautiful and cruel, a world full of giant trees that are home to entire cities and bloodthirsty nature spirits that are never up to any good. Humans do not belong in their realm. But humans cannot do without nature, so it’s the Queen’s job to control the spirits so that they do no harm.
Daleina is one of the several girls training to take the Queen’s job—that is, if she can pass her exams and survive the test that requires her to show that she can control the violent spirits. She doesn’t have her eyes on the throne; she’s here because she wants to keep her family and her village safe from another attack by rogue spirits. But what Daleina wants is of little consequence. There are many who wish to control the spirits and take charge of the kingdom—and it’s not just the spirits that pose a threat to humans in this world.
Pira’s family is unhappy. Her father sells her mother’s pies as his own, while scrutinizing her work with impossible expectations and taking every excuse to abuse her—the evidence of which prevents Pira’s mother from stepping out of the house, lest people think badly of Silas Baker.
Her mother asks Pira to be strong for her, but Pira can carry on no longer; she has her own life to live, but she can’t follow her own path unless she first saves her mother from her father. So she goes to the edge of Anson Farmer’s orchard and seeks out the Hollow Tree. There are stories and myths about the Tree, but Elias, her friend, tells her that the important part is knowing what you want and asking for it—and paying the cost, whatever it is—if the fairy of the Hollow Tree considers your request.
The hunter definitely broke hunting codes when he shot Archie while you were walking him in the woods. But no one’s really taking any action, and you refuse to sit and watch your dog suffer while the hunter roams around free. You want him to face the consequences of his actions, so you start doing research on your phone. Fortunately for you, there’s plenty of information on how you can haunt your local forest and get your revenge. But as with all information found online, you must beware what you’re getting into…
On the eve of her binding, Mika visits the Reaching Tree, her favourite place away from the village where she can spend some precious time alone, doing as she wishes. On this particular day, she finds a woman called Birdy resting against the tree, a strong, muscled woman she’s never seen before who says she’s from a place Mika has never heard of. Mika likes her immediately, and soon finds that Birdy was right to warn her about her betrothed Kolt, a man twenty years her senior. As the seasons pass and Mika finds herself busy with chores and fearing Kolt’s temper and fists, she returns to the Reaching Tree whenever she can. It’s the only place where she feels at home, and Birdy the only person she misses.
But there’s something strange about Birdy, or perhaps the Reaching Tree. She’s there sometimes, but at other times, she isn’t. When she does come, she talks of time as if living in a different season. As life back home continues and Mika loses a baby in childbirth, she finds herself going back to the Tree again and again, only this time, she starts to question Birdy—and reality itself, for in this whole scheme, it’s not Birdy who’s the strange one here.
There’s a trail you find yourself following. It looks the same as it did a millennium ago. Keep following the tunnel of trees and you’ll come to a natural dome. If you look carefully, you’ll spot fungi. They’re a special kind. The forest and the fungi will fill you with both dread and awe. But you don’t need to be afraid; the forest has no immediate plans to kill you.
You might want to think about that sentence again…

In recent years, illicit drugs in the US have been cut with some high-profile and dangerous adulterants, such as the powerful veterinary sedative xylazine (aka tranq) and the yet more powerful veterinary sedative medetomidine. But last year, a new adulterant hit the streets. Unlike its predecessors, it didn't show up here and there and gain ground gradually; it seemed to show up everywhere at once and quickly overtook the market. Even more oddly, it's not a type of chemical one might expect in illicit drugs. It's not another sedative. In fact, it has no known psychoactive effects at all.
The chemical is bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate, also called BTMPS, which is in a group of chemicals called hindered amine light stabilizers. BTMPS is usually added to plastics, coatings, and adhesives to protect them from weathering and UV radiation.
Researchers don't know why it's being added to illicit drugs—or what it does once it's there. BTMPS has never been tested in humans before given that it's never been intended for use in humans.
James McCully was in the lab extracting tiny structures called mitochondria from cells when researchers on his team rushed in. They’d been operating on a pig heart and couldn’t get it pumping normally again.
McCully studies heart damage prevention at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and was keenly interested in mitochondria. These power-producing organelles are particularly important for organs like the heart that have high energy needs. McCully had been wondering whether transplanting healthy mitochondria into injured hearts might help restore their function.
The pig’s heart was graying rapidly, so McCully decided to try it. He loaded a syringe with the extracted mitochondria and injected them directly into the heart. Before his eyes, it began beating normally, returning to its rosy hue.

Mid-range gaming laptops are already one of the best value deals in tech. You get a respectable gaming machine, without the screaming design, or the melting GPUs, or the long wait times. This Prime Day season, there is one mid-range gaming laptop that manages to stand out from the crowd—and it’s discounted over at Best Buy’s Black Friday in July sale.
The HP Victus 15.6 laptop with a Ryzen 7 chip and Nvidia RTX 4050 is down to just $650, from its list $900 list price, and is currently one of the best laptop deals available.
The laptop features AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS with 6 cores and 12 threads. It’s a solid gaming CPU built on the modern 6nm architecture. The RTX 4050 graphics card, though last gen, is nothing is scoff at either. The 6GB GDDR6 memory supports DLSS 3 technology for faster frame generation. You can play most modern titles in 1080p resolution at high or ultra settings, without worrying about overheating or dropped frames. What more could you want?
The laptop also includes 512GB NVMe SSD for fast boot-ups, and 16GB DDR5 RAM. The display is full-HD, IPS, and has a 144Hz refresh rate suitable for gaming. The display only gets as bright as 300 nits though. It’s not the best display for content creation or photo editing, but it’s well-suited for gaming.
The build is solid too, though not premium. The all-plastic construction is sturdy, and the laptop weighs a little over 5 pounds. There are quite a lot of ports here too: Ethernet, USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4a, and HDMI 2.1. But because this is a gaming laptop, thermal issues may crop up. (But nothing that a cooling pad can’t solve.)
Overall, at $650, the HP Victus 15.6 is a no-brainer deal. A modern 6-core processor, RTX 4050, 144hz display, and 16GB RAM at the cost of a 5-year-old MacBook Air M1. No bad at all.

Prime Day’s lineup this year has a few standouts, and Bose’s SoundLink Max speaker might be one of them, at least if you're after punchy sound and rugged looks in one grab-and-go unit. Normally priced at $399, it’s down to $299 for Prime members—the lowest price it’s ever hit, according to price trackers. That’s still a chunk of change, but if you’ve had your eye on something loud, durable, and well-designed, this Bluetooth speaker is worth a closer look.
The SoundLink Max lives up to its name with big sound and even bigger build quality. It’s got a silicone-wrapped steel frame, a woven carry handle, and a set of tactile onboard buttons that feel far better than your usual mushy speaker controls. Three front-facing drivers and dual passive radiators help push out a full, satisfying stereo image, and while it may struggle with ultra-deep bass at max volume, the mids and highs stay clear, notes this PCMag review. You get 20 hours of battery life per charge, IP67 dust and water resistance, and support for both aptX Adaptive and AAC, plus multipoint pairing for two devices.
The companion app adds some nice touches, too. You can switch inputs, adjust the EQ (bass, mids, and treble), and set a shortcut button to either the aux input or Spotify playback. The bass presets won’t make miracles happen, but they do help shape the sound if you’re outdoors or listening at lower volumes. If there’s a catch, it’s that you don’t get extras like a carrying strap in the box, and the design, while sturdy, does pick up dust. Still, for a speaker that’s meant to go from backyard BBQs to beach days without skipping a beat, the SoundLink Max gets a lot right.

Getting your home setup to feel like a real workspace can get messy fast, especially if you’re juggling multiple monitors, a webcam, external storage, and still need a charger. The Anker Prime 14-in-1 Docking Station tries to put an end to that mess, and for Prime Day, it’s down to $169.99 from its usual $269.99. That’s a 37% discount and the lowest it’s ever gone for, according to price-trackers.
This docking station covers almost everything you’d want to plug in. You’re getting 14 ports, including dual HDMI, multiple high-speed USB-C and USB-A slots, Ethernet, and SD card support. That means you can charge your laptop, phone, headphones, and tablet all at once, while pushing out video to two monitors. And with up to 160W total output and 100W charging from a single USB-C port, it's powerful enough to keep your main device running without a hitch. Just a heads-up: If you’re using macOS, the two external displays will mirror each other rather than act as extended screens.
Of course, it’s not the smallest thing around, and some features, like the 8K video output, depend on having the right gear. But for most users with a MacBook or a newer Windows laptop, it’s a solid way to expand what your machine can do without juggling adapters. Still, for this price, it’s a pretty solid all-in-one solution.

If you’re in the market for a new sleek laptop, the Acer Swift 16 AI PC might be for you. It has a huge 16-inch 3K OLED screen, and supports Windows Copilot+ features thanks to Intel’s new AI focused chips. But even if you don’t care about the AI features (understandable, honestly), the sheer power of the Swift 16 makes it worth a look. The only problem with the Swift 16 was its price: At almost $1300, it was tough to recommend.
Best Buy’s sale (competing with Amazon Prime Day) has taken care of that issue. For these couple of days, it’s available at a $450 discount, bringing the price down to just $799. This is the lowest price that we’ve seen yet.
With a 16-inch screen, and an all-metal construction, this is a big boy. But you get a huge OLED screen with 2880 x 1800 resolution, and really good battery life. In PCMag’s battery tests, it lasted more than 20 hours, which means it easily provides all-day battery life.
The Intel Core Ultra 7 256V processor is well-suited for productivity tasks, and the built-in GPU is great for driving high-resolution displays, and some gaming. But don’t expect to use it as a gaming laptop, as it can’t beat ones with a dedicated GPU.
You get 1TB of fast SSD storage, and 16GB RAM, which is more than enough for most productivity tasks. It also comes with Windows 11 Home, plus Thunderbolt and USB-C ports.
PCMag gave the Acer Swift 16 AI an “Excellent” rating of four stars, noting that “the Swift 16 AI delivers much to admire, particularly its OLED touch screen and long battery life. Paired with its Intel Core Ultra 2 V-class CPU, this laptop is well-suited to casual entertainment and light content creation.”

If your budget for earbuds has been stuck somewhere south of $60, Prime Day just delivered a decent option (at their lowest price ever, according to price-trackers). Samsung’s Galaxy Buds FE are down to $52.24 (from $99.99), and while they don’t check every box, they come pretty close, especially if you’re already in the Samsung ecosystem. The ANC is solid for the price, the bass is punchy, and call quality holds up well in everyday settings.
You’re not getting fancy extras like multipoint pairing or wireless charging here, and the IPX2 water resistance rating limits these to a light drizzle and maybe an accidental splash (definitely not for your HIIT gym sweatfest). But the battery life is respectable: around 6 hours with ANC on, plus up to 21 more from the case. Controls are intuitive enough once you get used to the touch panels, though accidental taps can still be a thing. And while you won’t find a custom EQ slider in the Samsung Wearables app, there are enough presets to adjust for casual listening. The app experience is Android-only, though. iPhone users can pair over Bluetooth, but most features won’t be accessible.
For Samsung phone or tablet users, the real magic is in the cross-device integration. Auto Switch lets you hop from your Galaxy Tab to your Galaxy phone mid-call or mid-song without needing to dig into settings. That’s a rare perk in this price range, notes this PCMag review. Yes, the app could be more customizable, and the water resistance could be better, but if what you want is strong ANC, decent sound, and features that make sense for a Samsung setup, the Galaxy Buds FE are worth a shot, especially at this price.

The world of mechanical keyboards is wonderful but confusing. Mechanical clicky keyboards don’t just give a satisfying click when you type—they’re also incredibly tactile. The keys themselves are built to last, and typing on a mechanical keyboard leads to less fatigue, and much faster response time compared to a regular laptop keyboard.
But getting started with mechanical keyboards can seem like a task. Which keyboard base do you use; which kind of keys are the best? If you just want to try out a mechanical keyboard without worrying about all that, get the Keychron K2. I’ve used the Keychron K6 for years now, and if I could go back, I would get the K2 instead. And for Amazon Prime Day sale, it’s discounted to $55.99 (down from $79.99). Given that customizable mechanical keyboards cost upwards of $100 to get started, this is a good deal.
Keychron is a reputable brand that has a history of making some stellar mechanical keyboards. They work really well with both Mac and Windows over Bluetooth. And you can also connect it to your computer over USB-C. Keychron also gives you keys for both macOS and Windows that you can easily swap out (Command key for Mac, Control key for Windows, for example). You can connect up to three devices and switch between them using keyboard shortcuts. (I use this all the time when switching between my Mac and PC.)
The keyboard can last up to 72 hours on battery, which is around seven days of full-day usage. Mac users will be happy to know that it supports Mac’s function keys. And there’s also a white LED backlight (just like Mac keyboards).
The K2 is 75% the size of a full keyboard, meaning it has the same layout as a laptop, but it’s not squished in. All the keys are full-size, and have good spacing as well. Plus, there are extra buttons for Page up, Page down, Home and End on the side. And most importantly, it has full-sized arrow keys—the one thing that’s missing from my K6 keyboard, where the arrow keys are awkwardly squished below the Enter button.
This version of the K2 keyboard features Gateron G Pro Brown switches, which are the middle ground of switches. Red switches are smooth, with no clicking sound, while the Blue switches are the really clicky ones you associate mechanical keyboards with. Brown switches offer a slight bump that you can feel, which I find to be the sweet spot. (If you don’t like the idea of brown switches, the silent Red switches model is also on sale for the same price.)
