Just watched my supervisor remind a patron that she needs to wear her mask so it covers her nose, only to have the patron grouse about how "it steams up my glasses".

a) Yeah, it's annoying to get your mask properly situated but guess what - all of the people who work here regularly wear glasses and yet we manage to wear our masks properly for 8 hours every day and have done so for over a year now. You can manage it for the 45 minutes you're in the library.

b) Ma'am, I don't know if you're aware of this but you are not currently wearing any glasses.

Yes, it does steam glasses, and there are several fixes for that online and elsewhere that you could use for that. When you have your glasses on.

There's something I'm noticing where dude people tend to be the ones who are wearing it over their mouth, but not their nose. I wonder if it's a weird masculinity thing.

Anecdotally, it is definitely more dudes at my branch. And all the reports I see of patrons getting actually aggressive about it at other branches in my system (not here yet, knock wood) have involved men as well.

It probably is some weird toxic masculinity thing, then. It's probably supposed to be some sort of "I'm only doing this because I have to, so I'm going to deliberately do it wrong as a protest."

Ugh. Aggressive people are the worst. You want the policy changed, you talk to the Board. But I think some of them just want to get it out on someone they believe can't fight back, because customers are always right or other such bullshit.
