You've never looked at any part of your head (save for the tip of your nose, and very awkwardly at that) without any medium to assist. Your eyes have never cast themselves nakedly upon any part of your head (except for the nose thing).
Your toes have touched a lot of things in this world, but they will (hopefully) never ever touch their respective ankle.

We think of the world of being full of vast open spaces, but in reality, from the thermosphere down, we live in a world packed with molecules (and ergo matter) between everything.
