Sep. 16th, 2013 10:22 pmConversations I had today at the library with small children:
1) Small girl: What are you doing?
Me: I'm putting the books away. When people return books, I organize them and put them back on the shelf.
Small girl: ::considers:: ...that seems like a boring day.
2) 10-year-old boy: ::looking at our fish tank:: You should get a tiny octopus.
Me: Oh, no. I would worry that it would escape.
10-year-old boy: They don't do that.
Me: I've read articles about octopuses in aquariums sneaking out of their tanks and into other tanks to eat the fish there. They're crazy smart - if they lived longer, they'd probably develop civilizations under the sea and challenge us for dominance of the planet.
10-year-old boy: ...huh.
3) Same 10-year-old boy*: Next month, they're going to recall all the hundred dollar bills and shred them and issue new ones. So you should hold on to all your old hundred dollar bills because they might be worth money someday.
Me: Well, they're worth a hundred dollars now.**
And that was my day.
*Amazingly, he kept talking to me after the octopus comment. In fact, he followed me around for about 10 minutes, talking about fish, fish tanks, an aquarium somewhere in Japan, Legos, the Lego website, and the aforementioned hundred dollar bills. It was very interesting.
**Everyone I've told this story to has said that exact same thing.
