Jan. 14th, 2013 10:43 pmThe thing about doing a medley from Phantom in choir is that I have not listened to Phantom in years. In fact, I don't actually own the soundtrack on anything but a cassette tape. (Well, okay. That was true up until two minutes ago, when I bought the mp3s from amazon because not having them is obviously a problem that needs rectifying now that it's been brought to my attention.)
What I mean is that Phantom, like Les Miz, is this big important formative thing for me. But, unlike Les Miz, I have not had occasion to revisit Phantom in at least five years. But now, because of choir, I have been reminded of its existence. Which is somewhat unfortunate timing. See, the music is not a problem - neither show takes more than a couple hours to listen to - but I am currently trying to read Les Miserables. I have tried before and never managed to finish it, because I am easily distractable and the bit about the history of the convent is so very long. Whereas I have never had any trouble finishing The Phantom of Opera or any of the attendant published fanfic. (Due to what is probably very good luck, the heights of my Phantom-fanfic-reading days were before I was really conversant with the internet, so all my Phantom fic comes in book form. Angel of the Opera is back in print, did you know? I am pretty sure that if I tried to reread that now it would be dreadful* but I'm really very tempted to try. But then, I am also somewhat tempted to retry The Canary Trainer because surely it can't be as dreadful as I remember it being. Both of these are stupid urges.)
Really, I need someone to tell me that I'm not allowed to switch books until I have at least gotten Cosette out of the damned convent. I'm pretty sure Monsieur Leroux will wait till then.
*I am terrified that this will have happened to Susan Kay's Phantom. Though it seems likely that that book is still enough "Look! It's Sara's id!" that I wouldn't care.
