darchildre: sepia toned, a crow perched on a gravestone (gravestone)
While I've been knitting the last couple of days, I've been listening to the backlog of old radio horror podcasts that I have building up on iTunes. Most of the time, I enjoy old radio horror because it's corny, rather than creepy, and because it does things that are wonderfully absurd. The other day, for example, I listened to an episode of Lights Out in which a man had taken his wife into some tunnels and was obviously planning to kill her. It was a fairly run-of-the-mill story of that kind - they couldn't get out of the tunnels and turned out there was something in there with them. Pretty standard, until you got to the 15 minute mark and the thing in the dark turned out to be...a dinosaur. Absurd and brilliant.

But this morning, I was listening to an episode of Suspense called Ghost Hunt, which was a lovely and actually creepy little haunted house story. The premise is that there's this radio announcer who's recording his stay overnight in a haunted house. The story doesn't do anything you don't expect it to, but it's nicely shivery nonetheless, as you listen to the radio announcer being slowly driven mad with fear. It's good stuff, and if you'd like to listen to it, it's available here.

It has, however, left me with a craving for haunted house stories. I found Ghostwatch online a few weeks ago and have been hoarding it (dear the internet, thank you for allowing me to watch things that are not readily available in this country) - maybe today is a good day for it.

What are your favorite haunted house stories?

ETA - You guys, Ghostwatch is awesome. Even watching it with crappy uploaded-to-google-video quality. Wonderfully shivery - I'm going to have to watch it again some time with the lights off to get the full effect.
