Oct. 7th, 2010 04:33 pmThis month's Library Safety Topic - the topic that we, as library staff, are supposed to discuss to make sure that we are as safe as possible - is lockdowns. I honestly find this a little hilarious as, well, have you seen the Kingston library? It is not a place I want to be in the event of a situation requiring a lockdown. Also, the library policy on lockdowns at this point is pretty much, "Well, we're not really sure what to do and we don't so much have a policy, so, umm...don't get shot."
But we keep talking about it and trying to figure out where we'd go and what we'd do and I have to admit that my brain keeps translating it into zombie preparedness. Because the situations are pretty similar, y'know? And my coworkers keep saying things like, "Well, what rooms in the building actually lock?" Which is good to know but man, none of the doors are sturdy at all and all my horror movie training keeps telling me that you don't want to hole up, that you always run to the ground floor and out, never up and in. High ground is good ground, but only if you've got a back door.
Also, we have no weaponry. I think we have a shovel. Maybe. Somewhere. Probably in a room to which we don't actually have a key. I don't even think I have matches, for gods' sake - I forgot to replace them when I transferred stuff to the current bag. I should remedy that when I get home tonight.
When Z-Day comes, we are going to be so screwed, I tell you what.
