The problem with mostly having taken piano lessons through middle school and high school is that the vast majority of music I have that is not exercise books is from musicals that I was, at that time, obsessed with.

The good thing about no one else being home is that I can spend an hour or so, playing melodramatic show tunes as loud as I want. Heh. Oh gods, Jekyll and Hyde - so terrible, so much fun.

Muscle memory is really kind of amazing - I haven't played these songs in years and I'm still about as good at them as I ever was. Which means that the finale to This is the Moment still really sucks (but is still really fun to play really loud) but the first three pages or so are pretty good. Y'know, in a "playing show tunes on the piano when no one else is around" sort of way.

Haha love it. I spent Rome playing Christmas songs at moms house on wednesday but my muscle memory wasn't so good.

Oh, dude, me too. In high school, my best friend and I would do this absurd thing where we divided up all the parts and would hang out at night in the elementary school parking lot across the street from my house with the soundtrack blasting on her car stereo and sing it and act it out, like the most low-budget two-man show ever. It was ridiculous and wonderful and, in retrospect, it's kind of a wonder we weren't arrested.

I still adore the show, but now I have a slightly greater awareness of its cheese factor.

I was in college when it came out, but young college -- and I was amazingly, ridiculously obsessed with it (ate one point someone wrote a parody version of an average night in the IRC channel we all hung out in, and my role consisted entirely of J&H lyrics 'sung' in all caps). I was ♥IN♥LOVE♥ with it, and no amount of telling me it sucked could convince me otherwise.

...I don't ever listen to it with anyone around, any more, and I don't run around quoting it, and I can barely listen to it with a straight face because of how absurd it is, but there are some of the songs that -- if I'm alone, and don't have to get all embarrassed and flustered trying to justify my love for it to other people - will sweep me back to that all-consuming ♥LOVE♥.

(and then it springs up with one of the "OMG I HATE JEKYLL AND WILL MAKE HIM PAAAAY" type lines and I just do a mental facepalm. :D)

...I may have talked my piano teacher into letting me learn Dangerous Game for a recital one time, despite the fact that it doesn't really work on solo piano and definitely doesn't work without being sung.

And yeah, it's definitely not something I'd play around other people but I do still pretty much love it unironically. Much the same way I still love Phantom, but if I'm around other people and need showtunes, it's much more likely to be Sondheim.

J&H is cheese but it's lovely cheese.
