darchildreOkay, this tops the earlier phone call.
Had a lady call and ask if we had Cutting For Stone. We don't, as it's been quite popular lately, so I asked if I could put it on hold for her. No, that wouldn't work. Well, the Little Boston branch had a copy, and Little Boston is quite close to Kingston, so I asked if that would work. So she asked me where Little Boston was.
"Do you know where Hansville road is?" I asked.
"No," she said.
"Okay, where are you coming from? Maybe I can give you directions."
"I'm in Oklahoma. I'm flying out to Kingston tomorrow to stay with my sister and I was hoping I could pick up the book to read while I'm there."
I still think putting the book on hold would work out better for her.
Then she asked me for the phone number for the Edmonds library, as she'd have to take a shuttle through Edmonds to get to Kingston. (That's where the ferry to Kingston is, after all.) Maybe they'd have a copy checked in. (I doubt it, honestly.)
"Do you know if the library is close to where the shuttle drops you off?" she asked.
Edmonds is, y'know, across the water. I don't spend a lot of time there, though I've driven through it several times. I've never been to the Edmonds library. It's part of another system altogether. I told her so.
She's from Oklahoma. It's possible she doesn't know about the ferry.
"Well, do you know if there are any bookstores in Edmonds? Maybe I can get one there," she asked.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I'm not at all familiar with Edmonds. The Edmonds library could probably help you with that."
I totally understand the need to have reading material on a trip but, y'know, I bring it from home.
