Hey, it's that icon meme again!

01. If you'd like, comment to this entry saying 'ICONS!' and I will pick 6 of your icons.
02. Make an entry in your own journal and talk about the icons I picked!

[profile] astrogirl2 asked me about:

keywords: scarecrow

I like scarecrows. For one thing, I like crows a great deal, and for another, I like rag-doll-like things, so scarecrows = awesome in my book. I especially enjoy the faded sepia tones of this icon. They manage to allow the scarecrow to look somehow abandoned without seeming creepy. (I think I yoinked this from a comm and have forgotten who made it. If it is yours, let me know so I can credit you?)

keywords: blonde and blue

Joe Dick and Billy Talent, from Hard Core Logo. The lyrics are from a song by the Headstones which is coincidentally the band fronted by Hugh Dillon, who plays Joe Dick. Really, the whole movie is about the tension created by the juxtaposition of the two ideas in those two lines of the song. I'm not entirely satisfied with the faded effect I got on the text, but it's kinda nifty nonetheless.

keywords: soapbox icon

Sometimes, I get irritated by the reactions I get from non-genre fans when they find out I read a lot of horror. A lot of them seem to think that horror is a junk genre, that it has nothing important to say, and that horror fans are all sadistic teenagers who watch slasher films for the gore effects. (Not that there is anything wrong with teenagers, slasher films, or gore effects. I have been a teenager, I love Nightmare on Elm Street, and a well-done gore effect is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.) I, on the other hand, think that horror can say important things and serves an important purpose. I think it's important for us to have a place where we can write down what we're afraid of and look it in the face. And one day I got pissed and made an icon. So now it's my general "I'm talking about horror again" icon.

keywords: janus is lord of the doorway

Do you know, I don't think I've ever actually used this icon? I made it one day while I was bored and poking at my graphics program kinda aimlessly. Anyway, doorways and keys are magical things. I don't know what's behind this one. It could be anything, after all. We won't know till we've gone through.

keywords: space owl!

The art is from a Bunny comic. Do you read Bunny? If you don't, you really should. It's awesome. This is an owl. He is in space. And he is coming. Yes.

keywords: what man knows kadath?

This is my Mythos icon, because sometimes one needs something Lovecraftian that doesn't necessarily involve Herbert West. (Herbert is marvelous but he is not really properly Mythos.) The picture is some kind of bacteria - I don't remember what kind. The text (and keywords) are from The Dunwich Horror, which contains the best quote from the Necronomicon ever. It is a description of the Old Ones and bits of it go like this:

... They walk unseen and foul in lonely places where the Words have been spoken and the Rites howled through at their Seasons. The wind gibbers with Their voices, and the earth mutters with Their consciousness. They bend the forest and crush the city, yet may not forest or city behold the hand that smites. Kadath in the cold waste hath known Them, and what man knows Kadath? ... Their hand is at your throats, yet ye see Them not; and Their habitation is even one with your guarded threshold ... Man rules now where They ruled once; They shall soon rule where man rules now. After summer is winter, and after winter summer. They wait patient and potent, for here shall They reign again.

"Their hand is at your throats, yet ye see Them not; and Their habitation is even one with your guarded threshold..." Mr Lovecraft may not, perhaps, have been the best of writers but lordy, I do love that bit.
